Another Eddy Curry / Baby Shaq?
Lamptey provides Heath with a big man he hopes can be a force inside. Lamptey chose the Razorbacks over Georgia and others.
" Julius Lamptey is a true low post player, "Heath said." He is a man-child. He still has some things he has to improve on, but as he matures and understands the intensity he needs to play at, he can be an unstoppable player. "
Arkansas hasn’t signed a true center in recent year and the addition of Lamptey had Heath making comparisons to NBA star Shaquille O’Neal.
" He’s just so big. He’s huge, "Heath said of Lamptey." He’s a Baby Shaq in some ways because of his size. He’s very athletic, he has got good hands and feet, and he really pounds the glass offensively as well as defensively. "When you’re a big guy and you don’t get to play against other big guys I think you tend to not play as hard as you need to. That’s something that he’s got to get better at, just rising up his intensity. Once he does that, the sky is the limit for Julius."
Lamptey signed with Georgia last season following a productive prep career at Oklahoma City Northeast. He’s spending this year at The Hampton School to improve his academic situation and be eligible to transfer to Arkansas. "Over the last year, he has lost 20 pounds," Heath said. "He went from 290 to 270 and because of that he can run the floor better.
" He has toned his body and is really improving at prep school right now. "
As a high school senior, Lamptey averaged 17.3 points, 13.5 rebounds and 8.1 blocked shots per game.
