Caracter, Deng, and Mizzou
In the latest issue of Sports Illustrated they had an article on Derrick Caracter, the 14 year old phenom. He said that he didn't even want to play in the NBA and that he wanted to be a vet, and was going to use basketball to get an education. Of course things could change, but from what I've heard about Caracter he's a smart kid and doesn't seem to love the game as much as a lot of people do. At the nike camp(or maybe adidas, whichever one he went to) Luol Deng basically took Caracter under his wing, and the two seemed to develop a pretty good friendship. That said, Deng is MU's number one priority right now and they seem to be in as good of shape as anyone with Deng. They also have a great vet school. If MU can get Deng, or maybe even if they don't, don't be surprised to see Caracter in a Missouri uniform in a few years.

Not to disturb any plans but I doubt Deng is in college when Caracter is a freshman.

I didn't say that he would be
In fact, I believe that it's impossible anyway, unless Deng redshirts and then stays all four years after that, which would never happen, barring serious injury. But the fact that they know eachother and that Caracter may look up to him would be a big factor I assume. Deng is one of the top players in his class, probably the best after James, but he's interested in an education as well. More players should be like Deng or Caracter.

Caracter's lonely favorite college is St. John's. He said that more than once.

Caracter is only 14. His opinion can and will change. How many times it changes is up to him. If he grows 2 more inches he'll be very tough. He goes to SJU and is a 1st round pick that's guarantted money. He plays 3 years, cashes in on FA (should be higher since he's a big body), and then may be only play out the rest of that contract. So now he's 32, he retires. He's 32 years old, millions of dollars richer, and now can pursue a career as a veterinaran. He goes to vet school, gets his degree, and now he has as long as he wants to be a veterinarian.
To conclude I'll say what I said at the beginning, he's only 14. Everybody wants to be a vet at some point in there life. That could chang very soon. IF he has the chance to play in the NBA he has to jump on it. Even if it's not a gloriuos 18 year career. But he's only 14, if he remains 6'9" we may not have to worry about the NBA, we'll see.
HE'S ONLY 14!!

He's going to be a freshman this year, right?
I only know of one person who at that time in their life still wanted to be a vet. I just don't think Caracter has the desire and love of the game that it would take for him to really pursue an NBA career.
