all alleyne
What sets Shagari Alleyne apart from most HS hoop stars? In addition to his height (he's 7-2), the senior-to-be at Manhattan's Rice High can't even begin to tell you what he averaged last year. "I have no idea," he says. "But I don't pay much attention to stats, because I play on a team where we're focused on winning championships." Rice won city and state titles last year, but this one was a little different than the program's previous championships, as Rice coach Maurice Hicks scrapped his usual guard-driven attack to run the offense through Alleyne.
"It felt really good that Coach decided to run a lot of the offense through me," says Alleyne. "When I couldn't score, I passed the ball out to great perimeter players like Jason Wingate and Keydren Clark. I improved my offense and passing a lot. I still have to improve my shooting range and my ball-handling to give us a good chance at winning championships again next season." And his numbers are sure to go up in the process - whether he's aware of them or not.
