When you think of Mid-West Hip-Hop, you think Kanye, Lupe, Ray Cash, Bone Thugs, Twista, Common, Eminem, Obie Trice, Proof, Slum Village or Royca Da 5'9". But all of those guys are from the same cities: Chicago, Clevland, and Detroit, so where else is good Mid-West hip-hop coming from? Look no further then Kansas....yes, Kansas. The 22 year old, XV, is the future of it.
XV, who with the help of his friend/producer Seven, put together a great mixtape. The "nerd" has a refreshing sound to him, take
I'm Goin' In (Check), for example. X talks about his fashion, his MC style, everything.
Thats Why I'm Here is a good opener for the tape, where X claims "We bout to drop a classic like it's in our hands."
Duce-One is a track that you have to pay close attention to, it's a great concept track where XV ties in the numbers 1-to-21 (in order), into a story, and 8 bars in he rewind's it just so you understand it.
My Favorite Pornstar is a different track, where at the start XV says "I'ma take my back-pack off for this one", and he mentions his love...for well, pornstars. He mentions more names in this song, then a West Coast Dedication track by Game.
Look How They Wave is a Jay-Z sampled track, which talks about how A&R's try to play young artist and screw them over on their deals.
Hypeman has Seven hyping himself, then goes to XV; the point of this song? XV is so dope he doesn't need anyone to hype him up.
Split Personality shows the versitility that X has, by rapping like a "Gangsta Rapper", "Backpacker", and a "Pretty Boy."
I Still Love H.E.R. is a modern day version of Common's classic. In this, he mentions Outkast, the snap movement, Eminem, East Vs. West, etc, a very good song without a doubt.
We All Get High touches on how everyone has a high, ranging from drugs, music, or a natural high.
Anchorman is a track where XV finds himself in the shoes of a News Reporter, reporting the Hood News, amazing song where he paints a great picture.
X To The (V To The) is the single off of his album "Complex", which is a good, up-beat way to end this tape off.
Overall, XV and Seven come together for 22 tracks of dope. If you like someone who can flow, paint pictures, delivers punchlines, and can flat out spit, then XV is your guy to go to. And if you're looking for a pretty good producer, Seven is the guy to listen to. This tape should not be slept on, XV is waking people up as we speak.
