Defense vs Offense

After Saturday's game...

Quote:
CHUCKY ATKINS
(on the Rockets) "They are going to have to score more than 85 points a game to win against the good teams in this league. It's going to be tough for them. I tip my hat to them, they beat us and that is all that matters."
So that got me thinking. In the past offense has been the key ingredient in the NBA correct? Could the Rockets, or any other team, be successful come playoff time with solid defense?

Thoughts?

Re: Defense vs Offense

our offense isnt good enough to beat a team like the spurs and i think that is pretty obvious. especially in a 7 game series where the other team gets to adjust. the rockets offense doesnt show the ability to do that (either because of personnel or coaching) and it will hurt us when a coach has the time to find our weaknesses.

same thing goes on D. we didnt adjust in the mavs series and we let jason terry kill us in all of our losses.

Re: Defense vs Offense

It doesn't make sense to say you need a certain level of offense to win. You can win the title scoring 85 ppg as long as you are able to hold your opponents below that. Only the combined effect of your offense and defense matters.

We have an excellent defensive coach and good / very good defenders in Yao, McGrady, Battier, Hayes, Wells, Snyder and Mutombo. Statistically, we are the second-best defensive team in the league. 10th offensively.

Re: Defense vs Offense

its no doubt our defence is solid and i do actually think it is good enough to hold any team under 90pts day in day out, at the moment the rox are the only team keeping there opponents under 90ppg and are in the top 5 for point differential at about +5 for points scored vs points against

Re: Defense vs Offense

I think we should progress both ends of the floor. We have a good defense here that is nice, but we have to make sure that we can keep the top teams under 90 ppg also. However, I think we need much more of an improvement on our offense. We can't always rely on Yao and McGrady. Young guns need to step up. We should developed our own style of play. Spread the floor with our superstars and let guys get wide open to shoot the jump shots.
