I'm starting to...
... admire Jeff van Gundy.
http://sports.yahoo.com/nba/news;_yl...yhoo&type=lgns
After reading this article, I started to realize how difficult was for JVG to work this very impressive record. Pat Riley couldn't do it at Miami, without Shaq. Boston couldn't do it without Pierce, and they couldn't do it at all, even though he's a SF/SG (crafty player, good defender). I'm betting all my bux Dallas couldn't work it either if Nowitzki got injured. But JVG did it. How? Working McGrady and the team.
And for this, he gets all my deep respect, even though he's an idiot sometimes. The good things are forgotten easily.
JVG -

Re: I'm starting to...
I have always liked JVG. Maybe because he was the one to give Chuck a spot in the rotation, maybe because he is brutally honest, or maybe its because he believed whole heartedly that he had enough to win and the guys believed what he said.
I never understood his substitution pattern last year, but I can see exactly what he is doing this year, with and without Yao in the line up. Took me about a month to figure out the pattern, but it works. (the only thing I didn't like was his try at the tiny rotation with Alston, Head and speedy the midget in the game at the same time)
It seems to me he got a bad rep at some point and its carrying over.
I hope he stays, because I love defensive minded teams, I don't know if I would love this team as much if they went the run and gun route.

Re: I'm starting to...
JVG got frustrating because last year his rotations were not exactly understandable. But I guess with such a horrid season last year, can you honestly blame him?
What I like and also hate about JVG, is that his ego, or attitude gets in the way of players. But he seems to mold players into tough defenders, with hustle and not a bunch of lazy asses.
I honestly think Chuck made the rotation because his first game on his 10 day contract last year, he had a double double, plays with hustle, and tries his hardest every game. Great positive influence on the floor.
overall, I feel he is a love/hate type coach.

Re: I'm starting to...
I like Van Gundy because he seems to be able to infuse his teams with good chemistry. Even New York in '99, which had a couple of headcases. And I like strong defensive teams. Van Gundy helped make even the '04 Rockets a top-5 defensive side. And most of his comments make sense. Reasonable. No nonsense. I don't think he's a great coach. But he's well above average (though, as a fan, I really have no good way to tell).

wasn't it his second game? At any rate... JVG didn't have to make Chuck a starter at the beginning of the season, so maybe I do have a soft spot for him.
The guy obviously knows what he's doing with this group. I am not ready to call him COY, but he's created a fun team to root for.
