independent teams cannot receive automatic bids. the reason is simple. they are not in a conference. however, they can receive at-large bids. in this case, i don't think it is likely to happen because the teams simply aren't good enough. out of all the independent teams this year, it is either their first year in division one off the probationary period, or they had losing records last season.
