NOTEWORTHY
As Western Conference trips go, it does not appear to be particularly daunting. Of the four opponents the Pacers will face on their final Western swing of the year (Denver, Portland, the Lakers and Utah), only Los Angeles is above .500. But the level of opposition lately hasn't been nearly as important as the level of the Pacers, who have lost two in a row after a five-game win streak to return to .500 at 28-28.
"The key for us is we've got to get the next win," said Coach Rick Carlisle. "That's really what we've got to hone in on. I'm leery of analyzing a four-game trip and getting ahead of ourselves. Right now we've got to get ready to play a Denver team that handled us pretty well a few weeks ago. Sitting at .500, we've put ourselves back in a tougher position and we're going to have to fight hard for wins out there because they're all quality teams."
Denver, in fact, may present the toughest challenge on the trip. The Nuggets, though 28-29 overall, have posted an 11-4 record since George Karl took over as head coach to climb back into the playoff race. That includes a 95-88 victory in Conseco Fieldhouse on Jan. 29. They've won four in a row overall and six in a row at home, where they're 17-9.
Carlisle's focus is on getting the team off to more vigorous starts. In New York, the fell into a 47-37 halftime hole and wound up losing to the lowly Knicks. Against Seattle Tuesday night, they trailed 32-20 after the first quarter and fought an uphill battle the rest of the night before losing 101-93.
"We've got to understand it's important to start out games playing with some force," he said. "I thought we eased into both the New York and Seattle games and that put us in a hole early in both. So good starts are going to be a priority."
The team should take on a different look during the trip. Dale Davis is likely to sign Thursday or Friday and could be available when they play in Portland Friday night. And injured starters Jeff Foster (back) and Jamaal Tinsley (foot) both could be back soon, as well. Foster said he "expects to play" in Denver, while Tinsley, who reported soreness after doing some light practice work on Wednesday, was less confident.
Denver also is dealing with a health issue, as power forward Kenyon Martin left early in the game against Tuesday night with left knee tendinitis and did not return. He's listed as questionable.
TRENDS
Pacers - Austin Croshere has averaged 10.3 points on 55.6 percent shooting in the last three games. ... Eddie Gill has gone 9-of-33 from the field (.273) in his last nine games. ... Stephen Jackson has averaged 20.3 points on 51.1 percent shooting in his last three. ... Anthony Johnson has averaged 8.4 points and 5.1 assists in the last 12 games. ... Fred Jones has average 6.3 points on 37.5 percent shooting in the last four. ... James Jones has made at least one 3-pointer in five straight games. ... Reggie Miller has averaged 15.3 points on 50.9 percent shooting in the last six. ... Miller needs 23 points to tie Patrick Ewing (24,815) for 13th on the NBA's all-time scoring list. ... Jermaine O'Neal has missed 15 free throws in the last three games.
Nuggets - Carmelo Anthony has shot 29.8 percent from the field in the last three but has made 32-of-36 free throws in the same span. ... Anthony is 2-of-13 from the arc in the last nine. ... Andre Miller has averaged 15.8 points, 6.8 assists and 3.0 steals in the last four. ... Earl Boykins has averaged 16.3 points and 9.3 free-throw attempts in the last three. ... Marcus Camby has averaged 11.7 rebounds and 4.83 blocked shots in the last six games. ... DerMarr Johnson has moved into the starting lineup at shooting guard and averaged 10.3 points in the last six.
SERIES
Denver will be going for its first sweep since the 1985-86 season. The Pacers have won 30 of the last 36 meetings and are 38-24 overall against the Nuggets, 14-16 in Denver.
KEY MATCHUP
Point Guard - The tandem of Miller and Boykins has combined for nearly 30 points per game in the last three, and the two are dramatically different players. Miller is strong and physical, while Boykins is slight but lightning quick. Without Tinsley, the Pacers will need Johnson and Eddie Gill to play strong defensive games in order to keep the Denver guards from controlling the flow.
INJURIES
Pacers - C Jeff Foster (back) is questionable; G Jamaal Tinsley (foot) is doubtful; F Michael Curry (hamstring), F Jonathan Bender (knee) and C John Edwards (thigh) are on the injured list; F Ron Artest is on the suspended list.
Nuggets - F Kenyon Martin (knee) is questionable; F Nene (knee) and G Voshon Lenard (Achilles) are on the injured list.

Re: Guess the Score Thurs. March 3rd @ Nuggets
Kenyon Martin is out, this should give us an advantage.
AJ is fouled on a J, he hits one at the line. 1-4 Nuggets lead, 10:28.
