QUESTION
OF THE DAY

Q. I live in Phoenix, Ariz., noticed the Suns are currently holding voluntary workouts at AmericaWest Arena. Training camp is only one week away but it seemed as if all of the Suns players were in attendance when it showed the workouts on the news. My question is are the Pacers already together as a team and working out daily? If so, who has showed up so far and what type of things are they doing? (From Brad in Phoenix, Ariz.)
A. At the urging of Jermaine O'Neal, almost all of the Pacers have been participating in voluntary, informal workouts for the past couple of weeks in Conseco Fieldhouse. Stepping right into the role of leader, O'Neal suggested his teammates get together early to get a jump on training camp and that's precisely what has happened. Ron Artest, Jonathan Bender, Austin Croshere, Jeff Foster, Eddie Gill, Danny Granger, David Harrison, Stephen Jackson, Sarunas Jasikevicius, Fred Jones, O'Neal and Scot Pollard have been regulars at the workouts, as has training-camp invitee Jimmie "Snap" Hunter.
In the past decade or so, it has become increasingly common for players to report early because of the need to hit the ground running in training camp. The less time a team has to spend on conditioning during the month of preseason, the more it can spend on fine-tuning its offensive and defensive systems in order to be as prepared as possible for the beginning of the season. Even so, it's particularly encouraging to see most of the team working together. They know what can be accomplished this season, and it appears they can't wait to get started.
