Arrow Hardball

hello everyone, this is something i think is overdue.
it is understandable how the ron situation can put the bender thing on the back of the list but, now that we have done the ron deal- it is time to deal with bender.
his house has been for sale for like 2 months now and he hasn't even been with the team for a while. he is like somewhere in louisiana now and has been trying to decide what he wants to do. his mri said he had no cartledge in 1 knee and the other wasn't far behind. his career is over and i think even he knows it too but, he seems to be draging his feet on this- unwilling to accept the truth. i think he might like to spend the rest of his contract (which includes next year too at like over 7 mil) just hangin out down there.

i say that management needs to give him an ultimatum to either:
1) return immediately and start playing or
2)retire

i know that may be harsh in some peoples minds but seriously- how long does this guy get to hang out on vacation (fully paid of course!!) and linger on like this? this needs to end like yesterday.

Re: hardball

I agree with you 200%...

This also has gone on too long, I can't believe the guy hasen't already retired, because it's obvious to everyone that he's never going to play again, and yeah we do need to give him an ultimatum if not now, then definetly at the end of the season...

J.B. just retire already, and let us all move on with our lives, please.....

Re: hardball

Bender's going to retire soon, he was probably waiting for Artest to get traded to see if he was involved in the deal.

They have a consciousness, they have a life, they have a soul! Damn you! Let the rabbits wear glasses! Save our brothers!" Can I get an amen? Can I get a hallelujah? Thank you Jesus.

Re: Hardball

i once thought that too but, the thing is- the only way bender could have worked in a trade or whatever is if he could pass the physical exam the other team gave him. there is no way he could have or would be able to pass it. thus, he would be untradeable. only the pacers can reap the retirement package of bender. we are the only ones. therefore, this needs to be finished asap.

Re: Hardball

I fully expect him to retire at the end of the year. I think he is a good kid and appreciates all Walsh and the organization have done for him medically and support-wise. Few companies (yes we are a company) would be as supportive of him as we have been and I think he respects this. But he really has no incentive to retire like today.

I'm not positive on all the exact stipulations, but I believe that as long as he retires some time before next year (and hopefully in June so we can be players in the free agent market), the Pacers can apply to get his salary removed from the cap for next year. And, with his history and medical situation, it shouldn't take more than a week or so for him to be deemed as "medically unable to play". As long as an NBA doctor says this, he's off the books. So it really makes no difference if he does this today or in May/June. And I'm assuming Walsh and him have already talked about this.

And for those calling Bender a "freeloader" or "on paid vacation", he still gets his $9 million next year if he plays or not. So he's set either way. I think he knows his career is over and will do the right thing for this organization and the friends he has in the Pacer lockerroom. Just wait.
