In my opinion this was a bad move, though I'm not sure they had a choice.
Bring on the Larry Brown rumors! A change was needed, just not sure this is the answer.

This team is going to be so, so bad next year. Call this move number one of the official re-build. Man, Carlisle was such a great coach, but was just constantly screwed with all the problems, injuries, and suspensions this team has had. I'd definitely want him in the front office, though. First, he's really smart, and second, he wouldn't help some other team, like a conference rival. I read that this team would make quick moves if any moves at all, so look for JO to be traded before draft day. We better have a new head coach soon, too, so the players can at least know who they'll be playing under next year, if they're even still here.

I think that the Pacers are just going for a new look. I think it is likely that you will trade JO (and probbaly not for his full value) and bringing in a new coach helps the "fresh start" feeling. Its going to be a different team next year.
