Season In Review: Orien Greene
Quote:
2006-07 REVIEW: When the Pacers signed Greene as a free agent last July, the hope was he would bolster the perimeter defense. It was a nice theory but Greene was never able to crack the rotation. Of his 41 appearances, most were of the token variety in the closing moments of lopsided games; eight times, he played less than 1 minute. There were moments and flashes, like his eight-point, five-rebound, three-assist performance in a March 10 loss to Philadelphia, but they were largely scattered. His best back-to-back performances came in the final two games when he totaled 26 minutes, 14 points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists.
STRENGTHS: A long-armed, athletic 6-4 guard, Greene has the ability to be a smothering defender. He led the team in steals per 48 minutes (3.2) and showed excellent rebounding skills, particularly for a guard. In the final stages of the season he was shifted, offensively, to shooting guard and Greene responded well when freed of the myriad responsibilities of the point.
WEAKNESSES: For a player of such bountiful defensive and athletic gifts to languish on the bench is evidence of an offensive game that is severely lacking. Greene's jump shot remains erratic at best and his decision-making on both offense and defense is suspect. He tends to take too many impractical risks, reflected in his 5.3 turnovers per 48 minutes (second-worst on the team). As a point guard, he lacked the necessary handle and savvy to run a team effectively.

My Grade- B
Greene showed why he's in the NBA this year, playing outstanding defense on his opponents. He has a great combination of height, strength, and quickness to really help with guarding opposing guards. On offense, he showed why he's almost out of the league: He's not very comfortable with the ball, and although a decent passer, he has a horrible jump shot.
