Dan Burke's 'team ego' makes him valuable

The one constant amid the swirling changes has been Dan Burke, who joined Larry Bird's staff early in the 1997-98 season as a video coordinator, worked in upgraded capacities under Isiah Thomas and Rick Carlisle, and has been retained for Jim O'Brien's staff.

"Dan Burke is a guy who has team ego," said O'Brien, who hired Burke without pressure from upper management. "Bill Russell's thing is team ego. It's the attitude, 'I'll do whatever you want. I don't care where my office is. You can put me in a closet. This is what I can bring to an organization.' "

"He never slept," Burke said. "He used to tell me, 'You only need three hours' sleep.' I guess I carried that to this job.
"He raised me, whether you're shoveling dog poop or bagging groceries, the only thing that matters is doing your best. There's pride in every form of work."

"The only approach I've ever had is to come in and do my job and never get outworked," he said. "My goal isn't to be a head coach; it's to be loyal to the (head coach) and to the Pacers.

That grew into a video coordinator's role, back when that was a newfangled thing, which increased in stature as technology improved. Carlisle and Harter became acquainted with him when they worked on P.J. Carlesimo's staff with the Blazers, and recommended him when they joined Bird's staff in 1997.

"Now I talk to some guys I used to work with and they tell me about the pain of moving and looking for a new job. I look back and shake my head. I'm so lucky, it's not even funny."
