O'Brien: Tinsley's my man
Quote:
The new Indiana Pacers coach understands you might not. Many fans see Tinsley as a mopey, inconsistent, oft-injured symbol of the team’s slide.
O’Brien sees something else.
He sees a player who gave him headaches when he coached against Indiana because Tinsley’s craftiness with the ball made him difficult to defend. He sees a player who is capable of running an up-tempo offense.
|
Quote:
That’s why, when many fans were willing to buy Tinsley a one-way ticket out of town, O’Brien approached team president Larry Bird and urged him not to trade his point guard.
“I know this, there are a lot of naysayers out there about Jamaal and whether he can be the guy (who) I put the ball in his hands and lead our team and do the type of things I want him to do,” O’Brien said. “I’m going to emphatically say, yes, he is. I said that to him the first time we talked.”
|
Quote:
|
“Jamaal has never really been given a chance to lead x the offense,” forward Jermaine O’Neal said. “We ran a system over the last four years that has been very complicated. We didn’t make any of the calls. Rick made all the calls, and it takes away from a player like Jamaal. Jamaal wasn’t happy in that type of system. He made that clear.”
|
Quote:
Tinsley said his issues with Carlisle isn’t worth discussing, but it didn’t take long for him to reach out to O’Brien.
Tinsley trains in Atlanta during the offseason and in previous years had been difficult to reach. Not so this past summer.
He called O’Brien the day he was hired. He picked up O’Brien at the airport when the two met in Atlanta.
“He wasted little time and said to me, ‘What’s the plan, coach?’.” O’Brien recalled Tuesday.
|
Quote:
|
“I don’t think that he has necessarily played the type of offensive basketball that has allowed him to play at his best,” O’Brien said. “I’m anxious to get him out there, anxious to get him in the flow of how I envision our offense being, and I believe he will excel in this style.”

Well, realistically I don't see that there's a whole lot of choice, so I'm glad everyone's happy

Re: O'Brien: Tinsley's my man
He is one of their better players, so it's not a bad thing.

Re: O'Brien: Tinsley's my man
That's sort of relative. It's not a bad thing that he's playing since he's one of their better players. It's not a good thing that he's their best PG, IMO.

Re: O'Brien: Tinsley's my man
I dunno... I'd put Tinsley in the lower tier of starting PGs. He really doesn't do much for me.

Re: O'Brien: Tinsley's my man
I've been criticizing Tinsley alot the last few seasons but I'm excited for him now.
