Matchday 13: June 21st
Match 1A: Portugal vs. Mexico Portugal has already qualified, while Mexico will most likely do so as well, no matter the result of this game. This match will determine who gets comes in first in the group and it will also determine who plays against Argentina and who plays against Holland in the round of 16. However, Portugal coach Luiz Felipe Scolari doesn't seem intimidated about the possibility of facing the Group of Death survivors. He will rest all five of his players with yellow cards. They are Cristiano Ronaldo, Nuno Valente, Costinha, Deco and Pedro Pauleta. Scolari has added incentive to their substitutes as he claims they have a chance at playing their way into the starting lineup. Mexico will still be without star striker Jared Borgetti who injured his thigh in the opener against Iran. Nevertheless, the team is confident despite the setback from the draw against Angola. Portugal's Projected XI: Ricardo Miguel - Carvalho - Meira - Caneira Simao - Tiago - Figo - Petit - Maniche Nuno Gomes ![]() Coach Luiz Felipe Scolari helped Portugal get out of the Group Stage for the first time in 40 years. After winning the World Cup with Brasil in 2002, does he still have the Midas Touch? Mexico's Projected XI: Sanchez Mendez - Marquez - Osorio Pardo - Torrado - Salcido - Pineda Zinha Bravo - Franco ![]() Mexico's captain Rafael Marquez has been in fine form during his World Cup campaign. He has controlled the backline, even when one of his partners makes a run forward. Match 1B: Angola vs. Iran Iran's star may not play in their final match. It isn't because of injury though. Despite playing lacksidasically against Portugal, Ali Karimi showed frustrating for his substitution by kicking a sports bag. This action may see him dropped from the first team. Defender Yahya Golmohammadi will definitely not be in the starting eleven, as he injured his shoulder in the same match. Meanwhile Angola will hope they can defeat the disappointed Iranians. With a win and a Mexico loss, there is a possibilit Angola could advance if they reduce the goal differential between them and the CONCACAF representatives. Luis Oliveira Goncalves has promised more offensive minded risks in his attempt to advance. This will likely mean dropping the 4-5-1 for a 4-4-2. However, Iran want to get something out of their World CUp and will hope to defeat the African side. Angola's Projected XI: Joao Ricardo Lebo-Lebo - Kali - Jamba - Delgado Ze Kalanga - Figueiredo - Mateus - Mendonca Akwa - Mantorras ![]() Striker Pedro Mantorras will likely replace defensive midfielder Andre Macanga as Angola desperately try to score goals, a feat they have yet to accomplish in Germany thus far. Iran's Projected XI: Mirzapour Kaabi - Rezaei - Bakhtiyarizadeh - Nosrati Mahdavika - Teymourian - Nekounam - Zandi Hashemian - Daei ![]() Ali Daei returns from a back injury in what will likely play in his last international game for Iran. <center><html><TABLE cellpadding="4" cellspacing="4"><TR><TH colspan="10" align=center scope="colgroup">Group D</TH></TR><TR><TH scope="col" align=center><b>Country</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>W</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>L</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>D</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>GS</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>GA</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>Pts</b></TH></TR><TR><TD align=center>Portugal</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>3</TD><TD align=center>0</TD><TD align=center>6</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Mexico</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>1</TD><TD align=center>3</TD><TD align=center>1</TD><TD align=center>4</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Angola</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>1</TD><TD>1</TD><TD align=center>0</TD><TD align=center>1</TD><TD align=center>1</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Iran</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>1</TD><TD align=center>5</TD><TD align=center>0</TD></TR></TABLE></html></center> Match 2A: Holland vs. Argentina The last teams standing from the Group of Death face off in what many considered the must see game of the Group Stage. However, barely anyone anticipated both to have already locked places up into the knockout round. Both sides have started to prepare for the next stage of the tournament and will use this game to test out some subs and relax weary starter and those with a yellow card. At this point neither side wants to make risky decisions that could deter a deep run in the tournament. Holland's booked players are Giovanni van Bronckhorst, John Heitinga, Arjen Robben, Joris Mathijsen, Mark van Bommel and Khalid Boulahrouz. Meanwhile, Hernan Crespo, Javier Saviola, and Gabriel Heinze have all picked up yellow cards for Argentina. Coach Jose Pekerman is not revealing who he'll start for the team many are dubbing the favorites after their 6-0 demolition of a strong Serbia & Montenegro defense. There is speculation that we will see many of the talented Argentine subs on for players who need a rest or need to avoid picking up another yellow. Holland's Projected XI: Van der Sar Jaliens - Boulahrouz - Ooijer - De Cler van der Vaart - Sneijder - Cocu Kuijt - Van Nistelrooij - Van Persie ![]() Rafael van der Vaart wants to impress Marco van Basten and earn a starting spot in the lineup he most likely would've had if not for injury. Argentina's Projected XI: Abbondanzieri Coloccini - Ayala - Milito - Sorin Cambiasso Messi - Aimar - Rodríguez Tevez - Cruz ![]() Things look good for Jose Pekerman's side and he hopes they still have room to grow after claims that they peaked in their win against Serbia & Montenegro. Match 2B: Cote d'Ivoire vs. Serbia & Montenegro Cote d'Ivoire won many fans and much praise for their impressive showings against Argentina and Holland, but they have yet to win any points. They proved they are ready for the grand stage and we will definitely see the debutants again in the World Cup. We won't ever see Serbia & Montenegro again, as they will split up. The loss against Argentina has made this campaign an irreversible nightmare. There will be many changes to the Football Association that remains in tact from the separtion of Serbia and Montenegro. Both teams will try to win to avoid being the celler dwellers of the tough group and hopefully mitigate some of the pain of losing both their opening games. Cote d'Ivoire's Projected XI: Tizie Eboue - Toure - Meite - Boka Keita - Yaya Toure - Zokora - Akale B. Kalou - Drogba ![]() Henri Michel's tenure as coach of the Elephants will end after the World Cup. Serbia & Montenegro's Projected XI: Jevric Duljaj - Krstajic - Gavrancic - Dragutinovic Stankovic - Duljaj - Nadj - P. Djordjevic Milosevic - Zigic Skipper Savo Milosevic is one of many veterans who will be appearing in his last World Cup final. <center><html><TABLE cellpadding="4" cellspacing="4"><TR><TH colspan="10" align=center scope="colgroup">Group C</TH></TR><TR><TH scope="col" align=center><b>Country</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>W</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>L</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>D</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>GS</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>GA</b></TH><TH scope="col"><b>Pts</b></TH></TR><TR><TD align=center>Argentina</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>8</TD><TD align=center>1</TD><TD align=center>6</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Holland</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>3</TD><TD align=center>1</TD><TD align=center>6</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Cote d’Ivoire</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>2</TD><TD align=center>4</TD><TD align=center>0</TD></TR><TR><TD align=center>Serbia <b>&</b> Montenegro</TD><TD>0</TD><TD>2</TD><TD>0</TD><TD align=center>0</TD><TD align=center>7</TD><TD align=center>0</TD></TR></TABLE></html></center> Sorry for any spelling or grammar mistakes as I didn't double check for them. |

Re: Matchday 13: June 21st
Look for Messi and Tevez to slowly get more and more playing time as the tournament progresses. Argentina have a lot of depth, and these two will be well rested for the knockout phase.
I think even with Portugal resting some of its key players, they should still pull off a victory. Mexico hasn't been very convincing, especially without Borgetti upfront. Portugal against Argentina in the round of 16 would be a fantastic matchup, but I'm hoping that does not happen because I don't want Portugal to get eliminated so early. Hopefully those two groups stay exactly the same, so Portugal can square off against Holland. |

Re: Matchday 13: June 21st
Look at Portugal's lineup for today's game. Their midfield is terrific. Even with Deco, Ronaldo and Constinha being rested they have Simao, Maniche, Tiago, Figo and Petit patrolling the middle.

Re: Matchday 13: June 21st
I agree about the hand ball, very stupid and definitely card deserving (which he didn't get). Once when I say Marquez is having a good World Cup he puts on this stinker.
This game has been very intense and both teams are trying to score goals and win, which is unexpected as most teams who are more or less through tend to pack it in. I guess both really want to avoid Argentina. Ricardo also came up with an awesome save against Omar Bravo, but then gave up a good goal to Fonseca on the ensuing corner. |

Re: Matchday 13: June 21st
2-1 at the half. Very good game. A very physical first half, with lots of chances. Portugal have been the stronger side, but Mexico has looked dangerous at times as well. It is clear that Mexico are really missing Borgetti. They just don't have that constant threat upfront, especially in the air on set peices, that would cause havoc for the Portuguese defense.
