29 KVBL Burning Questions

Like the old Inside Sports previews, one burning question for each team

1. Is there any reason to believe the 76ers can't repeat?
No, not really. Biggest threat is from the East itself, but this team is dynamite. Can score in bunches, and defend enough to win slugfests. Very good team.

2. How many players will spend time on Boston's roster?
The number is undefined at this point. After 2 titles, Boston decided to go from the KJ trophy to the KJ mantra of getting players he likes. Talented group of players, but I wonder how long this group stays together.

3. Is this the year the Heat take off, or take a year off?
GM Smath has stated that the Heat will be trying different combinations this year, which is the international sign for tanking. Not sure if it's true yet, but I could see the Heat as major players either way.

4. Have the Knicks turned the corner?
This is a team I like, but not really sure why. K4L stayed in the lottery, and ended up with Kwietak out of it. Not a bad decision . This team is very similar in setup to my Warriors, and might be better right now. The build could pay off very soon for the Knicks.

5. Is there a Magic season brewing in Orlando?
Omer's got a weird collection of players this year, but rookie Zach Tyler looks to be the go-to guy. Not sure what else he has in mind, but this team isn't far from contending for a playoff spot. The PG spot will be key, as Tyler is allergic to passing. An upgrade down low, and Orlando will be a playoff team.

6. Are the Nets back?
Yes, Brian's back. Clifton/Maynard is as awesome a top 2 as you'll find, and the supporting cast is there for a Nets postseason run. Brian's been to the conference finals before, and this is as much talent as he's had. Should be a fun team to watch.

7. Where are the Bullets going?
Much like the Magic, this is a team with some nice parts but no central theme. Really needs another big to be a threat, but the other positions are capably manned. A year away from being a threat I think, but I've been wrong before. I think Dre is capable of making this team dangerous.

8. Does the Buck(s) stop here?
QF is a master tactician, but I think he's a little outgunned right now. Thomson is a nice addition, but who's going to score points here? If QF gets another weapon offensively, this team becomes a deep sleeper. I don't bet against him in that regard.

9. Is this Chicago team the strangest setup Dornado's had?
In a word, yes. A consistent playoff team, but one I have a hard time figuring out. The post depth is good, but a motley crew of players. Will be a good defensive team, but like Milwaukee, may have trouble scoring enough.

10. Are the Cavaliers legit title contenders?
Yes they are. Very good front 5, especially with a meeting of the Allans. The East is going to be brutal this year, but it wouldn't shock me if they're the last team standing. Jay's a DC wizard, so he's going to get the absolute most out of his talent. If they stay healthy, this team is a top tier squad.

11. Does Caramel Love finally get a ring?
The Hawks were my pick to win it all, and I'm going to stick to it. Awesome starting 5, and some solid backups/role players. Man for man, probably the single most talented team in the league. BJ is not afraid to shake things up, but I don't think he has to this year. Sixers/Cavs/Hawks is must see TV.

12. What's up with Detroit?
League-run Detroit actually is pretty darn dangerous (ask the Hawks). The wings are loaded, so the season boils down to the play of Dautzenberg at the point. If he's good, this is a playoff team. If not, the lottery awaits.

13. How is the reshuffling of the deck going to impact London?
PP bid many of his players adieu this year, but Ricky (Lights Out) Briscoe is still there. That's a pretty darn good place to start. The 2017 All-Star team of Zvonko, Cooper, and Tate still has gas in the tank, so the Raps should be a playoff team, but their staying power is an open question.

14. Will Quebec be singing "O, Canada" in the playoffs?
I like the collection of talent in Quebec, but this team needs a post presence to be a force. Sidell is a great player, but he's not the PF that this team needs. The glass will be a disadvantage until it's fixed, and it's glaring enough to put the Sharks a year away.

15. Where are the Hornets right now?
Like a few other teams, there is talent here, but a couple flaws that could be exploited. There is plenty of depth here, but probably one player away. I am not sure where the Hornets rank in the West, but with it being wide-open, there's always room for a team to sneak in.

16. Can the Grizzlies hold the fort on the glass?
Although Daniels is a beast, I think the answer for this year is no. Fringe playoff team, but one that can't be overlooked. Vazquez will score a lot, but is he enough? Time will tell.

17. Will the Jazz take a two-point shot this year?
Not if KJ can help it. The bomb squad is back in full effect, and this is a playoff lock as constructed. It's a concept team that can give some teams fits, so a good first round matchup could propel the Jazz deep into the playoffs. Travis Perry is a star, and the rest of the team is built around him.

18. What's going on in Goulet's head?
No one knows. The mad scientist of the division, he's put all kinds of teams together with varying success. I picked the Thunder as a playoff team based on the volume of moves I expect this year.

19. Are the Nuggets the class of the West?
In a word, probably. Adding Durant's offense to a good team makes said team more dangerous. Everything is in place for another Finals run. If they stay healthy, they're going to win a lot.

20. Is this the Rockets' swan song?
It's getting close. D12 and LeBron are still great, but the clock is ticking. Probably one or two more good runs before Father Time catches up with them. I wouldn't bet against Duck for this year, but the clock is unrelenting.

21. Where are the Spurs?
Not sure what to think of this team. SCDN is a good judge of talent, and he's got the pieces. PG will be the difference maker for them, as a bad season at the point will bury them. Otherwise, a dangerous team.

22. Is King Kong enough for Minnesota?
Probably the deepest deep sleeper of all. Talented team who's way under the radar. If the Doonk is the deal, this is probably a very good team. The rest of the lineup is very good, so this could be a surprise team.

23. Is Portland's scheme shift enough?
The Blazers are probably the most different team from last year among the contenders. Rocky Marvel replaces Russ Westbrook, and the team has shifted to a more defensive strategy after their first round exit against St. Louis last year. If Marvel is the answer, the Blazers go far. If not, this is still a playoff team either way.

24. How much longer till the Clippers are a force again?
Not long now, probably a season of Goodhue progressions in the Wild West. A lot of nice pieces here, but probably a bit behind the top West teams.

25. How good is the Lake Show?
With a potential MVP in Matchechowski, the answer is very good. A slow-down defensive squad, the Lakers will be in every game. Points could be the kill shot though, as an up-tempo team can probably outscore them.

26. Are the Sonics ready to be Super?
Not quite at the elite level out West, but this is a talented team nonetheless. A lot of matchup choices for theAnswer this year, so the jury's out on which one he chooses.

27. Is it Sunrise in Phoenix?
Zei is the original mad scientist, and he's got himself a contender this season. One of the best starting lineups in the league, and a capable bench. Is Jim Richards the answer at PG? If so, book the Suns for a long playoff run. Spence and Rhodes will score a ton, so Richards' job is pretty simple. Get the ball there and play D.

28. Was last year's second half collapse a Harbinger for Vancouver?
Honestly, I don't think so. Adding Black to a team that was in it till the end can't hurt. Fookes had a tremendous year, and the offense would do well to run through him again. Good defensively, this team is probably pretty darn close.

29. Who are the Warriors?
A team that did nothing in the offseason, the Warriors return the entire starting lineup. Dre Byers is a beast, but the other 4 starters are probably league-average types. Many have this team as a playoff lock, but a lot has to go right for that to happen. Could be anywhere from top of the West to outside the playoffs. A mercurial team by any stretch.

Don't see me adding an offensive weapon this season. In all likelihood this will be another season as a cellar team.

I have the same question about my team. I'm thinking Jim Richards low usage, low turnover, solid passing with great defense style will be a good fit, but there may just not be enough scoring with him there, so we'll see.

Re: 29 KVBL Burning Questions

The updated (well, Day 1 FA) for the New Season

1. Are the 76ers back to their glory days?
I don't think so, but Aero's one of the best GMs around. I see him back in the playoffs this year. Travere is a beast.

2. How does Boston respond from last year's playoffs?
Great GM, elite players. This team will be dangerous again. The X-Men (Dong/Xerxes) will be a load again.

3. What do the Heat do for an encore?
Smath took home the title last year without the services of one LeBron James. I sense a hangover for the Heat (like many other champions), but still a dangerous team. Will be a tough out in the playoffs.

4. Have the Knicks turned the corner?
K4L is mercurial. Not sure what he's thinking, but I think the Knicks are going to be sweating it out the last SIM on the brink.

5. Can the Magic put it together for a run?
Not a deep run as currently constructed, but anytime you can get the rock to an elite scorer, you have a chance. Mickelbaum will be a very solid distributor on a team that needs one. Needs to get stronger on the blocks...if so, Omer's ruining somebody's party.

6. When are the Nets going to put their plan in place?
I see a long year for the Nets, but he has more future assets than the world market right now. I would say 2 years of good drafting OR a consolidation of those assets are in order.

7. Are the Bullets a legit contender?
I'm not sure on this team. I think Dre's a pretty decent handler of talent, but losing TWill may not have been in the plan. Cashman/Russell are on the cusp of superstardom.

8. Does the Buck(s) stop here?
The Prince got back to the playoffs only to run into the Hawks. Still good with a ton of young talent, this team will be a tough out and a middle seed.

9. Do the Bulls step into the spotlight?
Yes. Sleeper title contender. Scates is a behemoth. Dornado is a great GM. Good luck playing the Bulls this year. They're loaded.

10. Is this sunset in Cleveland?
Two things tell me no: Barry Wagner and Jay at the helm. One of the best DCers out there, he'll get the most out of his talent.

11. Now what for the Hawks?
Great team, great DCs, and that Caramel Love guy. Adding Tony Spence makes this offense even more deadly. Eastern Conference elite right now, and not a big stretch to crown them kings again.

12. What's up with Detroit?
I asked this last time, and I'm more confused now. Good pieces in Phillips/Mulroney/Rhodes, but the backcourt is a zoo. Nooby's learning fast, but this year could be ugly for awhile.

13. Are playoffs in the future in London?
Ricky (Lights Out) Briscoe is still there. Love Tyrone Williams next to him. Not sure on his other pieces, but PP is good enough to take this team to the limit.

14. How far is Quebec away?
Probably a year. Hunerman is a very good GM, and he's one of the smarter recent additions I've dealt with. Needs more firepower to match the top teams. Questions abound, but Hunerman can do it. Just ask FRSL.

15. Where are the Hornets right now?
Lot of work to do here. Probably a lottery team for a year or two while they retool.

16. Will winning the lottery make the Grizzlies a contender?
It will be interesting to see. The West is freakin' loaded, so AllRim is in a tough spot. He can do it, but not sure if he could beat the elite out West

17. Will the Landros-led Jazz advance to new frontiers?
KJ's systems are all about the 3 ball. Montgomery/Perry/Landros can all bomb away. This is a very difficult team to match up with. Could have a WCF ceiling if things go right.

18. How many games do the Thunder win the Midworst by?
OKC has the best post player in the game in Maynard, and plenty around him. He won it by 8 last year. I'd say 10 this year because the competition here isn't quite as fierce.

19. How long will it take Denver to get back to the playoffs?
Probably 2 seasons minimum. Needs a go-to weapon after trading Heastie, but has an anchor in Wright. I think this team's fortunes are tied to how many minutes Luis Ortiz plays.

20. How far are the Rockets from the glory years?
Pretty far right now, but Jude Parker could be the light that leads out of the darkness. D12 is getting old, but he's still very nice.

21. How far can the Spurs go?
After a very nice run in the playoffs and a monumental upset of Portland, this team is ready to take the next step. Heastie is just what the doctor ordered to make San Antonio probably the second place team in the Midwest behind OKC.

22. Can anyone figure out where the Wolves are going?
I can't, but I'm a moron. Sagan is turning into a force, and he and Kong will do damage. Will score, but can they prevent others from doing the same?

23. Has Portland moved on?
I think so. Won 62 games in the regular season with amazing D. Will win many games this year because of it. Very strong roster, and one that should be geared to play multiple rounds in the playoffs. I think Diss gets his ring this year.

24. Can the Clippers jump into the post-season?
Yes, but that Pacific division is no cakewalk. May finish a game or two out, but could sneak in as well. Probably the closest team to last year's Spurs as a potential dangerous team.

25. How good is the Lake Show?
I asked before, and I'm sticking with it. It's very good with Kenneth's new focus on bombing 3s to go with a great defense, this is a tough team to match up with.

26. Are the Sonics ready to be Super?
Yes. Answer took the West by storm last year; brought back Moncova; and still has Walker Gilchrist. Last year's run was a harbinger.

27. Is it Sunrise in Phoenix?
Travere Bernard is a stud, but the Suns loaded up in FA anyway. Zei can win. I don't think right now, but I'm not voting against him. Could be a tough low seed if he gets there.

28. Are the Lions the Kings of the Jungle or Secondhand Lions?
Drizzy's making strides. West is loaded, but the Fookes show should get a return visit to the playoffs. Tough out, but I don't think a title contender right now. That can change.

29. Is there finally optimism in the Gateway City?
Of course not. I like the starting lineup with Moss inserted at PG, but not sure where to place my team. Defense will be atrocious, but they can score a lot. I expect some very high scores, and losing many of them. 7 seed might be low, but I don't see a home playoff series this year for the Warriors.

Do you mean going as far as team building or going to finish in the standings? Cuz your guess is as good as mine on both counts. Probably gonna start Fugere/Chadwick/Kong/Rafa/Sagan with Kobe backing up the 3, 4, and 5, but who knows how that will work.

Re: 29 KVBL Burning Questions

1. Who does the bell toll for in Philadelphia this year?
Looks like this is Garrett Thomas's team now. Sixers are building, but it looks like the plan isn't complete yet.

2. Who's in charge in Boston?
If Secreast is back, this team's still tough. If not, a noob could get far worse than what's there in Boston.

3. Can Miami make it back to the winner's circle?
I'm not as high on the Heat as I have been in past years. Plenty of depth, but needs Jerry Andrews to remember how to be a star again. Playoff team no doubt, but I don't know if they're quite at the level of the elite in the East.

4. Have the Knicks turned the corner?
Same question, new year. Knicks are going to be one of the final 8, but I think their ceiling is probably 1 and done.

5. Will the Magic be playing post-season basketball?
I root for Omer every season, but I don't see enough outside of Tyler to make me believe that they'd go higher than 7 or 8 in the East.

6. When are the Nets going to put their plan in place?
I'm going to keep asking this until I hear from Brian. A motley crew right now, but maybe Marcellus Wallace will be part of the answer in the paint. We know he don't look like a bitch.

7. Is the Bullets window closing?
Tough to say because Cashman/Russell are still so good, but there are depth issues here. Dre's going to need to really hit the trade market hard this season.

8. Is Milwaukee ready to jump into the top tier in the East?
Absolutely. Prince has a great squad this year, and is going to be hosting a playoff series for sure. Young, exciting team.

9. Can the Bulls win the whole thing?
Yes. Super-deep squad with an emerging mega-star in Phil Scates. This is the team I think can hang with the Hawks.

10. Does Cleveland Rock?
Well, without Jay, no. This team's got some serious holes, but the right GM, it could be back in a couple seasons.

11. Is a repeat in the Hawks itinerary?
Yes. Atlanta as currently constructed is the prohibitive favorite to hoist another KJ Trophy. The East slowing down some makes this more likely, even though the Bulls are on the doorstep.

12. Will there be a playoff team in the Motor City?
This is a long-term rebuild project, so this year's answer is probably no. Putting together a nice young core, but that takes time, and there are still a lot of good teams to deal with.

13. Did Porn press the right buttons across the Pond?
Yes. He'll be putting together a playoff DC this year. Daniels deal was the piece he needed to make noise.

14. How far is Quebec away?
Same question, same answer. One more key piece to go with the 4 solid players he has, and this team's going places. Adding Victor Lord is a huge step in the right direction.

15. Will the Hornets improve?
They have to. Gary did beat some pretty good teams last year, and will win more games this year. The West is too deep to say more than that.

16. Can AllRim put his Grizzlies in the playoffs?
After the Duke, I don't quite know how the rotations will go in Memphis. Tyrone Williams will really have to be a difference maker this season against a lot of very talented West forwards. I don't know if Tyrone's enough.

17. What do we make of the Jazz?
KJ will get the most out of them...which could be .500 again. May sneak in out West because he can DC like mad.

18. What is Goulet thinking with the Thunder?
No one can answer that. Ever. Well, this is still a decent team; but I don't know how far the aging Maynard/D12 duo can carry OKC.

19. How long will it take Denver to get back to the playoffs?
Probably 2 seasons minimum. Needs a go-to weapon after trading Heastie, but has an anchor in Wright. I think this team's fortunes are tied to how many minutes Luis Ortiz plays. I'm keeping this in place, because the question and answer is the same.

20. Will Duck Season involve playoff games this year?
If the Rockets were a stock, I'd put a buy order on them this year. They will be one of the final 8 teams in the West. Jude Parker steps into the elite of KVBL this season.

21. Can San Antonio represent the West?
Yes, they can. I like everything about this team, and scdn has proven he can win. The Spurs are a "sum of the parts" squad, which means there's not one superstar, but a whole bunch of really good.

22. Did I brick on the T-Wolves earlier?
Yep, I sure did. Minnesota is going to be very, very dangerous this year. Depth, check. D, check. Scoring, check. Look out for Minnesota as the top contender to the Spurs in the Midwest very soon. Like now.

23. Is it do-or-die in Portland?
This is the ultimate chance for Diss. Great team that's getting older, but is anchored by a young star in Clothier. The Tulker signing made it obvious: All of the Blazers' chips are in the center of the table.

24. Are the Clippers a title contender now?
Yes, but they are going to have to earn their shot through the Pacific division. This is the year MemphisX has built for. Very strong squad this year, and anything less than a top half seed would be a disappointment in Clip-Town.

25. Are the Lakers the second best team in LA?
Yes, but by no fault of Kenneth's. The Lakers will still be in the playoffs, and will still be dangerous. If the 3s fall, this team becomes more dangerous because of the difficulty of matching up with so many gunners.

26. Are the Sonics ready to be Super?
My pick to win the West. Everybody's back, and I believe Answer learned a lot from last season. No way he gets swept again. This team is really, really good...and they have the star power of Walker Gilchrist.

27. Is it Sunrise in Phoenix?
Zei is trying to build the old fashioned way. That way takes awhile. Adding pieces to the frontcourt is key here.

28. Are the Lions the Kings of the Jungle or Secondhand Lions?
My favorite question of this article. Edwin Strauss makes this team legit. Really dynamic too. There's enough offense to hang with the big guns, and enough defense to keep the scores manageable. The lower scoring the game, the better the Lions will be.

29. What's behind the off-season plan in Saint Louis?
The Warriors did very little in the offseason (again). They bring back the starting lineup from last year (again). Jericho has a reduced role to start the season, but he's not really the focus on either end of the court. I predicted a 6 seed for the Warriors earlier. Looking at the West, that's probably pretty close. Not optimistic (duh), but this isn't the worst team I've put out there. I like the bench depth I have, but had to spend more than the Yankees to do it.

Breakouts
Breakout Player: Jude Parker, Rockets
Hey Jude, you're going places. Like to the playoffs this year.

Breakout GM: Drizzy
This is the Lions' best chance to go deep in the playoffs. Drizzy will push the right buttons, but is the talent enough?

Finals Prediction: Hawks over Sonics in 6
Atlanta is so good and so well managed...BJ wins yet another title.

It's 2026 so I'll be in the Finals again in year 2030.
