John Clay sits down with Leon Porter

Quote:
Rupp Arena--Lexington has professional basketball! Well, it's an expansion level franchise, but we have one of KVBL's great coaches in Leon Porter to talk to us about the buildup for season 2 at Rupp Arena.

"Coach, what did you think of the offseason so far?"

"The draft was critical this year. We needed to get "face of the franchise" type guys. I think the two lottery picks went very well. Buford is going to be our best player from day 1, and Tomer will be very exciting. I caught some video from Maccabi on Tomer, and he seems to be the kind of player that we'd like to keep around. Drafted for need thereafter, and even grabbed a couple extra second rounders for the future from the Pistons. All in all, I liked what we were able to accomplish so far."

"Have you named a captain for the upcoming season?"

"John, yes we have. Rich Knight will get the C."

"Do you have any idea what the rotation will look like?"

"Not really. A lot of business to be handled before we decide who's playing where. DeLeeRoy is probably the only guaranteed starter right now."

"Thanks Coach Porter."

"Anytime, John. We hope to have a winner here soon."

John Clay sits down with interim head coach Jay Spoonhour

Quote:
In a day many thought would never come, former championship coach Leon Porter has been fired by the Lexington Kings tonight. The Kings will be guided by Jay Spoonhour the rest of the season, and assistant Chris Jefferton has been promoted to Associate Head Coach. Jay is taking the time with me to go over what he thinks of the team now and in the future.

"Jay, congratulations on your first professional coaching gig."

"John, I wish I could be happy about it, but the whole team contributed to Leon's firing. One of the best minds in the game, but things didn't work out. The front office made a big splash in the trade market, but the team did not play well after Maynard was brought in. The play at Rupp was embarrassing for all of us, and Leon had to take the fall. Management was incensed by the reduced playing time to Tomer Hefetz in the last series of games. The Bulls game was the last straw, as Alex Ackerman got 39 hung on him by Phil Scates. At that point, the organization believed that Coach Porter didn't have a grasp of his rotation, and made the move."

"You mentioned the home record. Could you elaborate on what the higher ups saw?"

"Well, when you have a series of 7 games and 5 are at home; you expect to come up with a solid record. To go 3-4 is a sign of failure, and Coach Porter paid the price. In fact, the only home game we did win was by 17 with a huge 4th. Losses at home by 22, 23, 12, and 9 points at home is ridiculous. As many of you know, my position before was advance scouting, so I was not with the team for the homestand. Like I said, the failures on defense were paramount, but even the offense struggled. That's what I'm here to fix...the inconsistent play."

"You did have some tough opponents on tap at home this period. Did that figure into anyone's thought process?"

"Not at all. You have to win home games in this league no matter who the opponent is. We're not going to be great on the road (8-13), so we have to win home games. 9-11 in our building is pathetic. We all know that."

"Would you go game-by-game with me and analyze the set?"

"Sure. Game 1 was encouraging, as Big Al had a great night in a road win in Cleveland. The second game was a demolition at the hands of Miami...that's where we all got the ultimatum that this team better start winning at home. Game 3 was another solid road win in DC. From there, the wheels came off. A 23 point beatdown to Minnesota, a 12 point embarrassment against London, and the Bulls game. We did win 1 of those 4 games as we took out Washington for the second time this period. There were 3 playoff teams in our building, and we lost to all of them."

"Jay, thanks for your time. Now get the Kings going in the right direction!"

"Thanks John. We hope to figure out what we need to fix and get it going."
