2030 KVBL Draft Preview

Point Guards

Kurt Branson 6'3", 23, Iowa, PG

The Hawkeyes made it to the championship game behind the heady play of seniors Kurt Branson and Rick Lucas, but fell short of the ultimate goal. Branson is projected to be a top ten pick due to his strong three point shooting, capable ballhandling, and tenacious defense. It seems unlikely that Kurt will ever progress to being a superstar (or even a star), but he's poised to be a steady, effective part of a winning team for many years. If Branson can add some muscle to his frame moving forward, he'll be better able to handle the rigors of a KVBL season, and his defense should be that much better. Smarts won't be an issue for this coach's son, but his athleticism will certainly be put to the test.

Robin Lewis 6'2", 22, Arizona, PG

Robin Lewis looks to bring his fast paced game to the KVBL after a strong four years at Arizona. While not the most impressive athlete, Lewis is always pushing the ball and putting pressure on opponents. On defense, his lack of size works against him, but he makes up for it to some degree with his quick hands and ability to get steals. Teams will certainly wish that Robin could do a bit more on his own on offense (a three point boost would do wonders for him), but they'll be very pleased with his ability to distribute and get easy buckets after steals. Lewis could be the best point guard in this class in the long run, but he's going to need to spend a lot of time working on his offense for that to have a chance at happening..

Bo Roberts 6'1", 21, Auburn, PG

For a little guy, Bo Roberts has one heck of a big personality. The feisty guard led the Tigers to some big wins this season with timely three point makes and clutch free throw shooting. If this draft were about heart alone, Roberts would probably be the #1 pick. Alas, that's not the way it works. Roberts can be a bit of a streaky shooter, and his skills as a distributor are more acceptable than they are great. Defensively, Roberts often has problems due to being undersized, despite his solid technique. The good is enough to warrant a selection in the late lotto, but the bad might see Roberts waiting a bit longer than that on draft night.

AJ Mitchell 6'0", 21, Baylor, PG

Baylor had a strong season this year in large part due to the play of junior AJ Mitchell at point guard. A blur on the court, Mitchell's speed and conditioning made him a headache for all opponents as he got the ball to open teammate after open teammate with his drive game. Some of the passes he was able to make on a routine basis were absolutely absurd, and it's not a stretch at all to call him the best passer to enter the KVBL in some time. Turnovers are a bit of a concern moving forward, and putting the ball in the hoop is not something Mitchell excels at. Defense, too, will be a problem. The issues Mitchell will have as a KVBL point guard might be enough to relegate him to a bench role, but teams in need of a great primary distributor might be willing to swallow hard on his flaws and just go with it.

Blake Thomas 6'3", 23, North Carolina, PG

The third white point guard likely to go in the top twenty this year was a very steady leader for the Tar Heels in a year when injuries threatened to derail their season. Blake Thomas stepped up into a larger offensive role when his team needed him, doing most of his damage from behind the arc. A flashy passer he is not, but Blake is going to do a great job of running the offense and not turning the ball over. Stardom doesn't seem likely for Blake, but he'll have a long, productive career as a capable starter or very good backup. Defense is going to need to improve for most teams to consider starting him, but his work ethic should allow him to improve at least enough to be trusted out there in crunch time.

Twos and Threes

Caldarius Selby 6'8", 21, Louisville, SF

Caldarius Selby is likely to go first or second overall in the draft this year, and his complete offensive game is going to be the reason why. Selby took a huge step up in each his sophomore and junior seasons, and it's hard to imagine that trend won't continue when faced with the new challenge of going up against the best players in the world. A fierce competitor who hates to lose, Selby is going to immediately change the fortunes of the team that lands him. Defense, albeit not a strength, is going to be good enough from the get go for Caldarius. If he can improve on that side of the court, he has a chance at being one of the best players in the game. There's very little not to like about Selby's game.

Jaymes Gold 6'4", 22, DePaul, SG

There's only one player who right now looks like he could unseat Selby as the #1 overall pick, and that player is Jaymes Gold. The Blue Demons' best player took a huge leap in his senior season, showcasing the type of offensive talent that could have him someday leading the KVBL in scoring. Gold proved to be most effective driving to the hoop at DePaul, but he'll likely need to improve his jumper for battles with some of the elite defenders the KVBL will throw at him. Three point shooting definitely needs work. Defensively, Jaymes is going to need to work on his perimeter defense and try not to rely so much on his ability to block shots like a much bigger player. Turnovers will be a concern for Gold, but teams should be willing to accept that weakness given his incredible ability to score the basketball.

Scott Pelham 6'7", 22, Georgia Tech, SF

Scott Pelham did a little bit of everything for the Yellow Jackets, and it's that versatility that will likely see him getting his name called in the top ten on draft night. Offensively, Pelham's jumper was a bit up and down all year and could be an issue moving forward for him if he can't straighten it out. Other than that, though, there's not much you can complain about with this kid. Rebounding is very strong for a wing player, and he'll make his fair share of plays on the defensive end to spark his team. Passing is not a strength for Pelham, but he won't turn the ball over and isn't a complete ball stopper out there either. If Pelham lands on a team where the coach can boost his offense, look out.

William Wireman 6'8", 23, California, SF

The much maligned William Wireman came to Cal as an expected saviour, but ended up not quite able to live up to the lofty expectations everyone had for him. Part of Wireman's problem was that he never really seemed comfortable being "the guy" for the Golden Bears, something that shouldn't really be an issue in the KVBL. Wireman will be expected to be a cog rather than a star, and that should help him tremendously. Shot selection could improve for Wireman, as he seems to favor the midrange shot despite his better success from outside. Defense will probably need to improve a bit to make up for that, but he will be a great secondary passer out there wherever he ends up. William Wireman the star was never meant to be, but he could still very well end up a starter on a championship team down the line..

Alex Winters 6’8", 20, Xavier, SG

Xavier made the Sweet Sixteen this year behind a gritty team that played some tough defense all year long. The leader of that defense was swingman Alex Winters, a strong, long armed pest of a man defender. At the next level, Winters is going to need to maintain his strong defensive play to stick around, as he just doesn't have enough of an offensive game to get minutes otherwise. Three point shooting is strong, but scoring is very shaky from anywhere else on the floor. Further challenging Winters' long term viability as a KVBL player is his lack of strong defensive playmaking, something that could doom him to being nothing more than an end of the bench depth guy.

Jarvis Peters 6'9", 20, Fresno State, SF

Fresno State wasn't a very good team this year, but they drew a lot of eyeballs thanks to the string of great games put up by forward Jarvis Peters during the regular season. Peters was scoring inside and out, and had great defensive performances in a ten game stretch during which the Bulldogs went 9-1. The downside, of course, is that he didn't keep that play up all season long. The question, then, is which version of Peters will KVBL teams be getting? Scouts have gone to either extreme, but the middle view seems to be that Peters is likely to be a midlevel combo forward at the next level with a knack for blocking shots. His athleticism is off the charts, but it's no sure thing that he'll be able to translate that into production. A smart pick in the middle of the first round, but some GM could try to hit the jackpot and nab him earlier.

Ramon Bogguss 6'5", 22, Kentucky, SG

Kentucky had a down year behind a group of players that just didn't come close to the level of talent that fans of the school have grown accustomed to seeing out there. The best of the bad bunch this year was Ramon Bogguss, a two guard with limited talent and an iffy jumper. Bogguss' main strengths are his knack for coming up with rebounds and his solid man defense. Those two things should ensure that he has a job somewhere in the KVBL, but it doesn't seem likely he'll ever be more than a roleplayer. Bogguss will probably go in the late first, but he'll need to work on his game if he wants to last beyond his rookie deal.

Matthew Billingsley 6'3", 21, TCU, SG

Matthew Billingsley is likely to last in the KVBL for a long time because he does two things well: score and get steals. Billingsley seems destined to come off the bench for a team that needs a sparkplug, but starting is probably not in his future. Defense is very much a weak point for Billingsley despite his steals, and that's usually going to keep guys from starting in the KVBL where you've got to be elite on offense to get away with that. Still, for a guy that wasn't heavily recruited out of high school, Billingsley could do worse than getting drafted in the first round and being a roleplayer for years on end.

Bigs

John Marsh 6'10", 22, Virginia Tech, PF

Last year's draft class featured two great wings at the top, with some very talented bigs following close behind. This year is quite similar, and the man at the top of most draft boards as far as bigs are concerned is John Marsh. Offensively, Marsh is a complete player with a knack for getting to the line (where he actually hits his free throws). Most of his work is done in the post, but he can hit fifteen footers with consistency and is a threat to put the ball on the floor against slow footed defenders. The only things keeping Marsh from being in the discussion with Selby and Gold for first overall are his so so rebounding and his lack of shotblocking.

Jon Winthorp 7’0", 23, Eastern Michigan, C

The other "Jo(h)n" in this year's draft is a big beast of a man out of Kalamazoo. Winthorp is purely a post player and could be seen by some as a more logical player to build around than Marsh due to stronger rebounding and shotblocking while not dominating the offense quite as much. The argument against that line of thinking is that Winthorp hasn't shown quite the knack for getting to the free throw line, and seems more likely to be a finished product than Marsh at this point. A top ten selection is all but guaranteed for Winthorp, and it wouldn't surprise many scouts to see him go in the top five. You can't teach size, and Winthorp certainly has it.

Rick Lucas 6'9", 24, Iowa, PF

The other half of the Hawkeyes' dynamic duo this season was a bruising big man who shot 63% and gobbled up rebounds on both ends of the court, Rick Lucas. Lucas usually only got the ball inside where he could put it in the hoop, often of his own doing via offensive rebound. Shotblocking was not a big part of Lucas' game, and defense in general was more solid than it was extraordinary. Still, there's not much to complain about with this kid. Age might knock him back a peg or two, but he should be a lotto selection and will help a team out right away.

Nate Parkinson 6'8", 21, Oklahoma, PF

Oklahoma's offense thrived this season behind the scoring and passing of combo forward Nate Parkinson. The lanky kid from Nebraska showed off some crafty footwork this year that allowed him to score efficiently for the Sooners, and his passing essentially gave the team two point guards out there. The downside to the Parkinson story is that he's really not much of a defender or a rebounder. Those two things will limit his minutes at the KVBL level, but he should still be able to help a team with his unique skillset.

Zack Edwards 6’11", 19, Belmont, C

Zack Edwards always looks like he's having fun out there, and that attitude should help him be a boost to the locker room of the team that drafts him. Locker room morale isn't all there is to the sport, though, so it's good that Edwards also brings a good rebounding presence to the fold. At just nineteen years old, Edwards is going to have the opportunity to take big strides in the next year or two for whichever team drafts him. He'll need some work in the post offensively, but he's certainly got potential.

David Ivey 6'10", 24, Missouri, PF

Mizzou won a lot of games this year thanks to the sharpshooting of their big man David Ivey. Ivey hits shots from all over the floor (even out behind the arc), and he never turns the ball over. Those two things made him a very valuable commodity at the college level, but his KVBL future might not be as bright. Rebounding is not nearly at the level you'd want from a big man, and defense is going to need a boost as well. If Ivey can boost either or both of those, he'll greatly increase his chance of having a long KVBL career. For now, he's likely no more than guy at the back of a team's rotation.

Wilson Heath 6'9, 22, Southern Illinois, PF

Wilson Heath looked like a star against weak competition, but looked very plain when matched up against any top level talent. That pretty much tells you what you need to know about his KVBL prospects. He's certainly capable of being the third or fourth big in somebody's rotation, doing well against bench level talent, but he's not really ever going to be starter material. Drafts can't be full of stars, though, so getting a guy like Heath in the mid first isn't really something to complain about.

Vincent Stryker 6'10, 19, Duke, PF

Duke was hoping to keep Vincent Stryker around to anchor their defense, but dollar signs were too much for him to pass up with the KVBL calling. An offensive plodder, Stryker is set to be a Sal Bundy level big man at the KVBL level barring any huge leaps in his development (which are certainly possible given his youth). Rebounding is good but not great. Strides there would do wonders for Stryker's career (and checkbook).

Re: 2030 KVBL Draft Preview

Early previews in my draft years started as an offset to later previews in years where I wasn't in charge. At this point, it's just tradition. Easier to deal with as well.

UFA #2 is yet to be completed, but it's essentially a filler. It used to be spread out longer, but experience showed that the league (on the whole) preferred a faster pace. There are sometimes some pretty solid players still hanging around in UFA #2, but typically it's just an opportunity for teams to meet the roster (or positional) minimum before the season begins.
