They just drafted a point guard. They dont need to acquire one in a trade. They can easily sign a veteran backup type PG in free agency, and thats all they need. They dont need anyone who is going to take minutes away from Livingston, hindering his development.
If the Clippers do not get Kobe, I would love to make this deal for Caron Butler. Ive had similar thoughts in the past.
Caron Butler is a much better fit for the Clippers with Maggette than Quentin Richardson is.
Butler has far superior ball handling ability when compared to Q. If we run a lineup of Livingston(or whatever PG), Q, and Maggette, there is only one player on the perimeter that can bring the ball up and initiate the offense. There is only one player that can handle the ball on the break. There is only one player that has the ability to create for others.
That will result in the offense slowing down because there is no versatility among the perimeter players. All the playmaking duties fall solely on the point guard, and you need more than one creator on the floor.
Butler can bring the ball up and initiate the break. He can score almost as good as Q as well.
On defense, Butler again is a superior player to Q. He would provide the team with better defense, which is something the team is lacking on the perimeter.
With Butler over Q, the Clippers improve their ball handling, their passing ability, their ability to run the break, and their defense. The only thing they may lose is about 2 points per game from the individual from Q to Butler(Butler is better than he showed this year, as he struggled to come back from his injury and when he came back, his role on the team had diminished because of the emergence of Wade and additon of Odom).
