Cassell, who had a $6.1-million salary last season, said he's seeking at least a two-year contract.
Quote:
The Clippers plan to offer Cassell a one-year contract for more than $6.1 million guaranteed but are reluctant to commit two years to him. Cassell turns 37 on Nov. 18, and backup point guard Shaun Livingston, 20, could be a starter next season.
Quote:
The Clippers are hopeful Radmanovic would return for the midlevel exception of about $5 million, and they want to extend the contract of the 7-foot Kaman, who averaged 11.9 points, 9.6 rebounds and 1.38 blocked shots in a career-best season. Re-signing Cassell for one year fits with the team's salary-cap strategy, sources said.
Quote:
Dunleavy's agent, Warren LeGarie, might seek a three-year extension for more than $7 million per season. Of course, Dunleavy could become a free agent after the 2006-07 season and pursue a big deal elsewhere after having helped to engineer the Clippers' turnaround.
I dont see what the problem is to have Cassell for two more years. He played at such a high level this year that in two years he will still be a good player and especially with the health concerns of Livingston.

i think he's referring to everyone's prices going up after this season.
what is the luxury tax threshold going to be in 07/08? Maybe if the clippers are serious about extending kaman, his extension would kick in starting 07/08. If they still have cassell on the books for 8 million or whatever that year, PLUS considering the increases in everyone else's salary, perhaps they WOULD be in luxury tax land.
In other words, maybe they dont want to be in the situation that the suns are right now. Maybe they want cassell for one year, and then the next year have a draft pick replace him, or have ewing step up.
Its a risky game theyre playing thats for sure. You dont want to piss off cassell.
If my calculations are correct, if the clippers continue business as usual, resign kaman, have cassell for TWO years, in 07/08 their payroll would be in the 55-60 million range. Thats luxury tax, right?

Clippers will be foolish to low ball Cassell. He is worth the extra year.
Livingston might be ready to play 30+ mpg as a starter by 2007.

Can we just sign Cassel for whatever keep us under the cap for the next two year and promise him a over paying job after he retires. Just wondering, coaches salaries are not included in the salary cap, right?

Clippers org does some very foolish things sometimes....
but they've shown signs of improvement, hopefully they don't screw it up.
And hopefully the money issues won't poison the locker room like it did a few years back.
