Kaman To Play For Germany?

Quote:
Imagine a front-court with Dirk Nowitzki and Chris KAMAN.

No, this is not NBA trade talk about Nowitzki going to the Los Angeles Clippers or Kaman to the Dallas Mavericks.

No, this is about Germany - and a real possibility for the national team after the Clippers forward recently said he had German roots and had been thinking about playing for Deutschland.

National team coach Dirk Bauermann admitted the national federation would be foolish not to try and get the big man a German passport.
Quote:
Upon further questioning if any efforts on-going to bring Kaman in, Bauermann added: "We would be stupid if it was possible and we didn't. And I'm going to leave it at that."

The whole story came into being when Kaman told a German basketball monthly that he had German great-grandparents and that he had thought about playing for the country.

"I think it helps the foreign players when they play in the summer for their national teams. I would like to do that, too," Kaman was quoted as saying in FIVE magazine.

When asked about joining the German national team, Kaman added: "I even thought about that. But then I would be a traitor to my country. I don't know if I could do that."

Wow, a front-court of Dirk/Kaman in FIBA can really do some damage.

Haha, I guess couldn't blame him. He can't make team USA, so why not play for the land of his heritage? I want to play for team Armenia! They seriously need the help.

I didn't even realize we[Armenia] had a squad. I'm moving there...watch me in the 2012 Olympics!

I'm stuck on the fence with this. Should Kaman go, and gamble with fatigue and being tired along with potential injury, or just stay here and work on his game with Elton this offseason so they can form the Twin Towers next season.

Sweet, I'll be rootin' for ya buddy! You're still young enough to do it, I think by then I'll be a little too far over-the-hill. LOL. Seriously though, they do have a team, it's just a very, very bad one right now. If I'm reading the scores correctly on the Eurobasket website they've been getting drubbed. http://www.eurobasket.com/arm/arm.asp

As for Kaman, I hadn't considered the possible injury/fatigue implications that could result from his participation. Now I'm not so sure I want to see him do it. Maybe he should take the time off and just continue to work on his game. I can't wait to see the new and improved Caveman alongside EB next season! Forget those jokers talking about letting Elton walk or trading him, they don't seem to realize how valuable a solid frontcourt is in the NBA. If healthy and performing at peak levels, Kaman and Brand would be right up there with Bynum and Gasol.

Re: Kaman To Play For Germany?

I read the interview in the magazine, he said it jokingly more than anything else. There is probably about a one percent chance for it happen, Dirk might play his last games with the national team this summer and if he stops playing for Germany I doubt that Kaman would want to play.

LOS ANGELES - Imagine this sight: Chris Kaman in lederhosen.

OK, maybe that image will never come to fruition, but the Clippers center could be wearing basketball shorts for the German national team.

Kaman is waiting to be approved for a German passport to become eligible for the country's national team. He hopes to join Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki on the team and compete in this summer's Olympic trials and, hopefully, in the Beijing Olympics.

"The USA never approached me about anything, so I just want to be able to play in the summer," Kaman said. "And this is a way to do it, and it's not some cheesy summer league."

Kaman has had conversations with Nowitzki about playing on the team, and the 7-footer is following a long procedure to prove he is eligible for the squad. He says he is German because of his father's bloodline.

"Dirk put me in contact with a couple of people with the German federation, and they're trying to help me out," Kaman said. "They're trying to dig into my history and find out where I'm from. ... I don't know what the percentages is, the rules and everything. You have to jump through a bunch of hoops to get there. And it kind of stinks, but you have go through it."

Wow, I'm stunned. I thought it was a joke, but now this looks to be done unless the German authorities screw it up.

Re: Kaman To Play For Germany?

So, now this summer, I'm going to be glued to the TV to watch Kaman in Germany, Sofo with Greece and possibly Dickau with Poland!

Re: Kaman To Play For Germany?

Very nice. I just hope he doesnt get TOO used to the international rules, and has some memory lapses when he returns. Starts trying to take balls off of the rim and what not.

Playing next to dirk will show what he can do when playing next to a perimeter oriented big man, as opposed to a low post guy like brand. I think it would work. I can't believe kaman is the only guy with any german blood in him around though. Year in and year out the german national team really sucks because all they have is dirk.

Re: Kaman To Play For Germany?

nothng good can come from this...he will likely be more fatigued at the start of the nba season, and there is an increased risk of injury...nothing good...

The Olympics are in August, so he has more than enough time to get in shape for the NBA season. I agree that he could be more tired, but this would be his first year when he plays competitive basketball during the summer, plus if he can pick up some Olympic spirit and should be worth it for him to become a better player.

Re: Kaman To Play For Germany?

Yeah. Like Kaman said, playing in the olympics is much better practice than summer league like hes been doing the last few years. Not to mention is a great experience. Seriously...were talking the olympics. Most of us as kids dreamed about being in the olympics one way or another.
