Clippers' situation at center

First of all Olowokandi is not a great and maybe not even a good player, he deserved 6.5 mil per year. Melvin Ely though is signed for 4 years at low cost and he is a better rebounder and shot blocker than Kandi, and their scoring ability is a toss-up. The only knock on Ely is that he's a bit undersized, but so is Zo. Kandi will not get his big contract next year, and will probably be delt in a sign and trade (becuase he's eligible for more when signed by the Clippers) and could find himself being traded for yet another rookie (Eduardo Sonseca Hernandez is on my mind). In any case though Ely is perfectly capable and having Ely at center isn't the worst thing because it free's up minutes for Wilcox at PF. One more thing people constantly forget Elton Brand can also play center, he may be only 6-8 but he can guard and out muscle every center but Shaq. The Clippers are better with Ely not Kandi at center, just look at the shooting percentages, Kandi 43% and Ely 56% average over 4 years of college.

With all things equal(meaning we get Kandi at a fair price - $80mill is not fair), then the team is better of with Kandi. He's a true 7' force in the middle.

But, if it does take $80mill+, I would rather go with Ely.

I think Ely is perfectly capable of playing C in the league.

He's 6'10 250lbs, with a 7'4 wingspan.

He's definitely capable of playing C at that size and with that wingspan. And, he has the attitude of liking to play down low and wanting to bang. The guy can definitely be an NBA C.

As mentioned, Zo is only 6'9 255-260, and nobody questions his ability as a C.

Detroit had a fine season with Ben Wallace and Cliff Robinson being their starters at the 5.

The team can still win IMO with Ely at C, as long as Brand, Miller, LO and others are kept. You don't win because you have a 7footer, you win because you have a great team. And I believe the Clips can win with the team they have, minus Kandi.

I honestly don't think Ely would put up numbers any worse than Kandi. He's at least as good a boarder and defender, and he shoots at a much higher clip than Kandi, AND, he shoots from the 15ft range at times, whereas Kandi rarely strays further than 8.

With Rooks as a backup, and bringing in a big body as a backup(Chris Marcus in the draft) and Elton Brand, the team has enough size and muscle to make the C position a strength for it's team.

The key to all this though IMO is making sure Brand, Miller, and LO get signed. And honestly, Im a bit worried about that. Brand is the one player that should be locked up right now. Before Kandi, before Miller, before Odom. If we offered him the MAX or right near it, Im sure he'd take it. Signing him would get people off DTS' back and would allow Brand and other players on the team feel comfortable that DTS is going to pay guys.

I couldn't have said it better, wait I did I just posted it in the wrong topic, I would also add that a productive Ely will leave money to spend on other players down the line such as Maggette and Q.

If you play Ely, and he reaches his potential, which I think he will, you have a very solid center nicely fit under the cap. Teams dream of this.

I understand what everybody is saying but Ely hasnt played a single minute against any NBA caliber Centers yet. Kandi just got finshed his 4 or 5th year in the league. He started balling at an older age. Besides how can any of you compare a 30-35 game season of college ball against an 82 game season of MONSTERS for MEN. Nobody in college could muscle any center in this league right now so I feel what's being stated is wrong
