With all things equal(meaning we get Kandi at a fair price - $80mill is not fair), then the team is better of with Kandi. He's a true 7' force in the middle.
But, if it does take $80mill+, I would rather go with Ely.
I think Ely is perfectly capable of playing C in the league.
He's 6'10 250lbs, with a 7'4 wingspan.
He's definitely capable of playing C at that size and with that wingspan. And, he has the attitude of liking to play down low and wanting to bang. The guy can definitely be an NBA C.
As mentioned, Zo is only 6'9 255-260, and nobody questions his ability as a C.
Detroit had a fine season with Ben Wallace and Cliff Robinson being their starters at the 5.
The team can still win IMO with Ely at C, as long as Brand, Miller, LO and others are kept. You don't win because you have a 7footer, you win because you have a great team. And I believe the Clips can win with the team they have, minus Kandi.
I honestly don't think Ely would put up numbers any worse than Kandi. He's at least as good a boarder and defender, and he shoots at a much higher clip than Kandi, AND, he shoots from the 15ft range at times, whereas Kandi rarely strays further than 8.
With Rooks as a backup, and bringing in a big body as a backup(Chris Marcus in the draft) and Elton Brand, the team has enough size and muscle to make the C position a strength for it's team.
The key to all this though IMO is making sure Brand, Miller, and LO get signed. And honestly, Im a bit worried about that. Brand is the one player that should be locked up right now. Before Kandi, before Miller, before Odom. If we offered him the MAX or right near it, Im sure he'd take it. Signing him would get people off DTS' back and would allow Brand and other players on the team feel comfortable that DTS is going to pay guys.
