Riley Vs. Jackson
Who do you think was the better Laker coach? Riles during the Showtime era, or The Zen Master during the Kobe & Shaq era?

Re: Riley Vs. Jackson
Phil is quite simply the greatest basketball mind in human history. I'm convinced after reading all his books.
His ability to discover role players from the garbage heap and makes the invaluable contributors is unrivaled. The only area Riles beats him in is motivation.

Re: Riley Vs. Jackson
well, you're making that kind of poll in the laker's forum... u know, the team that phil coaches. due to bias, im pretty sure most people are going to pick phil.
im not sure if im being bias myselfv, but i like phil more. then again, i dont know squat about coaching... so my opinion doesn't even matter.
btw, if you want to talk about a coach who can turn a heap of trash into gold, talk about poppovich. ginobli and parker were drafted deep in the first/2nd round, and look where they are now. that's not to mention bruce bowen. im shocked that ginobli was drafted at 57th...

I think I can honestly say without bias that I pick Phil. Just read his books and make up your own mind.
Just because Ginobilli and Parker were drafted late, doesn't mean they weren't talented players. It's harder to gauge players from Europe. Bowen is the only one that really apllies, but he was a good player for the Heat as well.

Re: Riley Vs. Jackson
I'm with Jamel, I've read 2 of Phil's books and he justs blows me away with his assesment of players, and his ability to develop any player regardless of talent.
BTW, Jamel, do you know how many books he has in total I've read 2 of them so far, Last Season, and More Than A Game, what others does he have?

Re: Riley Vs. Jackson
i wanna read his books now, damn.. especially the last season.
one thing i do think is that pat knows how to give that cliche inspirational speech to his player... while phil wants to make them think on their own. i think pat riley is a better fit for shaq, because he's basically a neanderthal who doesnt want to think for himself.
im not saying one coach's method is more effective than the other though..
anyways, i personally (at least for myself, as in if i were a basketball player) prefer phil to be my coach. i rather think (because basketball is definitely a thinking man's game) than have someone think for me.. plus even though phil's a bit 'in-your-face' he's not as much as riley is... or was at least.

He's written 4-
Last Season (2004)
More Than A Game (2001)
Sacred Hoops (1995)
Maverick (1976)
I've never read Maverick. Sacred Hoops is widely regarded as his best book. It deals more with how he intertwines spirtuality with hoops. I think it should be required reading for anyone who wants to coach.
