CHAMPAIGN - Brian Cook gripped a basketball for the first time in a month late Thursday night, when a group of former and current Illinois players met at the Ubben Basketball Complex.

Cook broke his thumb during a pickup game at a Los Angeles sports club last month. With the pin removed last week, the Lincoln native is back to preparing for his fourth season with the Los Angeles Lakers....

No but seriously.. Personally I'd love to see him stay with the Lakers but dont get too comfy Brian, go back home to Chicago (well close enough to home) and do your stuff there!

He had some great games this year, and even got a new career high. He should be fairly solid in 06-07.

with vlad in the mix though, i dont know hwo many minutes he'll get next year.. mabye 20 max? hell, he only got about 22-24 minutes last year i think, might be less... like around 17 mpg.

ah damn i just checked, only 19 minutes..

Cook wouldn't be to bad comming off the bench in very limited minutes. Reguardless of my dislike for his lack of defensive and rebounding talent, he shot the bell pretty well for a young guy last season. And if he hangs are round for cheap I wouldn't care. But I doubt the Lakers will keep him around once his contract is up.

Brian Cook has a very specific role on this team, and he does it very, very well. his troubles on the defensive end stem more from a lack of focus, and bad technique. He's actually an above average athelete. Looking long term, he would be a nice back-up, as he would be instant offense off the bench. However, Ronny Turiaf would be more of a change up at the 4, bringing a lot more energy. It'll be interesting to see how the minutes are divided at the 4 this season, and what kind of contract Cookie will ask for at the end of the season.

I love having Cook off the bench. I like that little pick and pop with Kobe and Cookie.
