Short-handed Hawks sign Medvedenko

The Hawks signed veteran free agent center/power forward Slava Medvedenko Thursday to bolster their depleted frontcourt.

A six-year NBA veteran, Medvedenko arrives just in time to help fill the gap left by Josh Smith's four-week stint on the inactive list. Smith had hernia surgery Tuesday and won't return until sometime in late January.


Medvedenko, a 6-10 1/2, 230-pounder, won championship rings with the Los Angeles Lakers in 2001 and 2002 alongside veteran Hawks point guard Tyronn Lue.

He averaged 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 249 career games and put up his best numbers (8.3 points and 5.0 rebounds) during the 2003-04 season.

Medvedenko practiced with the Hawks for the first time Thursday and flew with the team to Houston for Friday's game against the Rockets.

Terms were not disclosed.

Medvedenko, 27, spent the last six seasons with the Los Angeles
Lakers, averaging 5.4 points and 2.9 rebounds in 249 career
games. The 6-10 forward-center appeared in just two contests
last season.

A native of the Ukraine, Medvedenko helped the Lakers capture
championships in 2001 and 2002. He enjoyed his best campaign in
2003-04, when he posted career highs of 8.3 points and 5.0
rebounds per game
