Fisher's Impact Felt by Lakers

Press Enterprise: They came into the NBA together in 1996, two rookies trying to prove their worth with the Lakers. They played eight years together, winning three championships, developing a bond, a friendship.

Now Derek Fisher is back with his backcourt mate Kobe Bryant, trying to reclaim that glory.

Fisher spent three years away, playing two with the Golden State Warriors and last season with the Utah Jazz before signing a three-year, $14.3 million deal with the Lakers this summer.

Right after he signed the contract July 20, Fisher sent Bryant a text message, letting him know his commitment to the cause and to being there for Bryant, just like he was in the past.

"I said, 'From this point on, we are connected again,' " Fisher said after Sunday's practice. " 'We're back together as warriors, as brothers, as one-day champions again. I want that and I know you want that. Let's go get it.' "

Fisher has begun this quest by being more of a leader in training camp. He talks to his teammates, explaining to them how to be professional. He shows them how to run the offense.

He has become someone Bryant and the rest of the Lakers can lean on.

"I have that responsibility with this particular team, to not only be solid and consistent in terms of on-court performance, but also off the court," Fisher said. "One of the responsibilities that I have, and it's a big one, is to bring a feeling of unity that's put in a community feeling of togetherness, and with everybody just kind of getting back to a place where we have one common goal."

Re: Fisher's Impact Felt by Lakers

I don't care what anyone says, this was an outstanding pickup for the Lakers. Fish knows the system, is close to Kobe, and will hold down the PG position until Farmar or Critt are ready to take over. I am not saying he will win us a title, but he will help get us going in the right direction.

I think this is a great pick up for the Lakers to. And will help a lot. But he isn't the answers the Lakers have needed to get to the next level.

Re: Fisher's Impact Felt by Lakers

Although Derek Fisher's previous experience with the system is a plus, his defense is what troubles me: there's no chance he can stay in front of guys like Parker, Nash, AI, Deron, etc..

So, not a big upgrade, IMHO.

Re: Fisher's Impact Felt by Lakers

I think Fish is a huge upgrade. Just his leadership will help us a lot. Then consider his knowledge of the game and it makes perfect sense.

There are maybe 1 or 2 guys in the league that can stay in front of Parker, Nash, AI etc. They are superstars for that very reason.

Re: Fisher's Impact Felt by Lakers

I still think this was a bad pickup. He is a good guy to have for chemistry reasons, but his actualy decision making skills are nothing special. He has no ability to create for others, doesn't attack the hoop well, and his outside is streaky.

And while it may be true that no one can stop a guy like Nash one on one, how can you explain Fisher getting ROASTED by Troy Hudson of all people? And that was several years ago when Fisher wasn't quite as slow as he is now.

He's just taking time away from Farmar and Javaris.
