Yesterday, before the game, the standings had the Lakers and Hornets tied for first place, which meant that with a win last night, the Lakers would be half a game ahead of the idle Hornets...but the Hornets have a better winning percentage, so they are actually still in 1st place...it's definitely a little confusing.

hm, i don't find it confusing at all - i disregard who is ahead in the win/loss column and just look straight to the winning percentage.
i don't think it's uncommon either.

I've been an active NBA watcher/follower since 1986. This is the first season I've paid any attention to winning percentage over win/loss record.

Re: Lakers are a negative half a game back
It's not very common in the nba that one team has played three more games than the other. Its even less common that those two teams would both be above .667 and in the same conference. It is even less common that team that has played more games would have 2 more wins and 1 more loss than the other team. Keep in mind most years, very few teams win more than 2/3 of their games.

Re: Lakers are a negative half a game back
actually it's pretty common to have an nba team play 3 more games than the other. orlando has played 72 games while washington has played 69. chicago is at 69 as well. and milwaukee. and charlotte.
and it's more like.. it's likely two teams in the same conference will be above .667 winning record. look at th eastern conference, boston and detroit are both well over .667.
last year you have phoenix at .744 and dallas at .817.
the year before that you have dallas and san antonio each respectively at .732 and .768.
the year before that, both dallas and san antonio were above .667 as well... and in the east two teams were nearl .667 as well (miami/detroit).
and i don't get it, why would it be less common that the team that has played 3 more games than the other have 2 more wins and 1 more loss? if anything, that's what you should expect.. because they win 2/3 games.

So in three years you have three sets of teams that won more than two-thirds of their games and you call that common? Meanwhile you only have 2 teams in the league right now that have played 3 more games than another team and you call that common? I've seen this happen once earlier this year and never in the previous four or five seasons in either basketball or baseball.

Re: Lakers are a negative half a game back
yeah i do call that common, because it happens once a season. it happening doesn't make me go "wow". and i think there have been plenty of times when there is a team that has played 3 more games than another. it's just not something you would really notice, but it's there.
what's rare is the fact that there are 5 teams in the western conference with a .667 winning percentage or higher. that's amazingly good.
