Bynum To Get Another Medical Opinion
Quote:
Lakers center Andrew Bynum, his January knee injury still preventing him from returning to the court, will seek a second medical opinion, the Lakers said Monday. He will see Dr. Steven Gecha on Wednesday in Princeton, N.J.
While it had been expected that Bynum, 20, would not be back for this postseason, this decision would appear to not only cement that scenario but it also creates concern that Bynum's recovery could extend into the summer or beyond.
Bynum injured his left knee on Jan. 13, suffering a bone bruise and briefly dislocated kneecap. The healing process has been overseen by Lakers doctors and New York knee specialist David Altchek.
Bynum has yet to engage in a full practice. It is still difficult for him to put the full weight of his 7-foot, 285-pound frame on both legs and one-on-one drills have caused swelling in the injured knee.
He has one year left on his contract, after which he'll be a restricted free agent. The Lakers this summer could offer Bynum a five-year extension for up to $80 million on top of the remaining year of his contract.
If his upcoming exam reveals new complications, however, that extension could be put on hold.

Re: Bynum To Get Another Medical Opinion
We should end it humanely and put him to sleep...end the suffering

Re: Bynum To Get Another Medical Opinion
The front office is going to have a GIANT decision to make when it comes to extending him. This is a scary situation if he is going to seek a Max extension... Think Grant Hill financially crippling the Magic's payroll for all those years when they signed him to that contract and he never played a full season with them. It would be so sad to see a 20 year old finish his career with so much potential, and every single report just seems to get worse and worse.
If I were in Bynum's position I'd ask for a 1-year, MLE type of extension to see if he can prove that he is back at full strength... it seems like he owes it to our organization just because of the risks we've taken on him. He owes us to not force us into one of those life-or-death type of contracts. If he comes back next year and kicks *** the way he has been, I say its a no brainer for us to extend him, but if he shows signs of being too ginger and too cautious while he plays, I'd say give him a small extension to see what happens.
I would write more but I accidentally deleted everything that I was gonna post and I don't want to type it all again

It will be interesting what they decide to do. He still has a year left on his rookie deal, though, afterwhich he'll be a restricted FA. I'm sure the Lakers don't want him even sniffing Free agency, but I don't think they're going to have a choice. You can't give an extension to a potentially injury prone 7 footer based on less than half a season's work with no indication of how he'll recover. It won't be that big of a risk seening as how a) we'll be able to offer the most money and we can match any offer b) we're a pretty dam good team w/o him.
All that aside, I'm really concerned for Andrew. If he can't get over this soon, he may not be able to add much to his game this summer.

I really dont think there is any chance of that. Wouldnt he want to get paid while he can if it that bad of an injury? Some team would be willing to take a risk on the injury front. Of course this is a whole bunch of big future "what ifs". IMO his offer for a future contract should be done halfway into next season(which is my guess of when they will do it), no need to rush. Also, nobody owes nobody nothing except for what already signed contracts. A big reason why a player always says "I want to be a (any team) for life" is because that team can pay up the most, not allegiances or "owing a favor" to a team.
I hope that didnt sound like I was ripping on you personally because I wasnt
