Why? What has led you to believe this is different? There is never "no chance" that it could be more serious so I think that is a loaded statement.

Nash is older, but I dont see how any of these reports are any different than what was expected. He has a fracture in his leg, when it heals he will be back out on the court.

Steve Nash still limited

Nash had already been ruled out of the Lakers road games in Memphis on Friday night and Dallas on Saturday.

"I can't jog yet so ... I don't think so," Nash said when asked if he thought there was a chance he could play Tuesday, after being re-evaluated by the Lakers team doctors on Monday.

Nash said that his leg, which was injured in a freak play when he banged knees with Trail Blazers guard Damian Lillard on Oct. 31, has been "progressing a little bit" recently. But he said that it's still painful and the nerve pain he's been feeling is a bit concerning.

"Hopefully it's something that resolves soon," Nash said. "Nobody really knows because it's not like tissue or bone. It's painful. It's under control right now, but it's still very sensitive so it can flare up. We just need to let the nerves settle down."

Nash had tried to do some stationary on-court drills about a week ago, but he experienced some pain afterward and the Lakers decided to cut back on that type of work.

"It kind of flared up so we kind of cut back on that," he said. "It wasn't anything bad, it was more that I just realized I'm not really ready for that."

Right now, Nash is just doing conditioning work on the elliptical machine and lifting weights. He isn't cleared to shoot or jog.

The longer he is out, the longer it seems it will take the Lakers to learn new coach Mike D'Antoni's system. D'Antoni, meanwhile, also said it was "possible" that backup Steve Blake could play on Tuesday, but only if Blake is able to go through a full practice after being re-evaluated by the Lakers doctors on Monday.

"Nash can do everything," D'Antoni said. "He doesn't need an offense. He just needs the ball."

D'Antoni was more optimistic about Nash's chances of playing Tuesday, but he admitted that "I'm saying it's possible because I like to believe it."

With Nash and Blake out, the Lakers have had to rely on second-year man Darius Morris and veteran Chris Duhon. Kobe Bryant has assumed many of the playmaking duties as well.

"It's difficult for me to be myself and not be playing," Nash said. "You're not healthy, you can't work, you can't add energy. You can't do anything. I'm watching and trying to take it in, but I'm also trying to fight my own mentality in getting my body ready.

"I feel like I can help. I know what he wants and what he's trying to do. I can help with situations and details that maybe could help them."

The extended absence is particularly difficult given the Lakers' short window to win a championship with this current group.

"It's hard. I have my moments where I get down," Nash said. "I haven't been out this long in 10 years. It's hard. It's frustrating. I worked really hard this summer and through training camp this year. I was just starting to come into myself. Now how long is that going to get that back when I'm healthy. It all plays in your mind and makes you really eager."

Lakers' Steve Nash 'getting better'

The Lakers canceled an MRI that was scheduled Monday for Nash, opting to put him through a series of drills instead with strength coach Tim DiFrancesco.

"I really don't (know when Nash will return)," Lakers coach Mike D'Antoni said. "It's getting better every day. I know we keep saying that, but it is. Just when he's able to withstand some up-and-down, he'll play."

The Lakers have gone 7-5 in Nash's absence but are coming off a road trip when they went just 1-2.

"We're doing it without (Nash), who is kind of the engine that is going to drive us forward," D'Antoni said. "So we're going to have some bumps along the road."

Steve Blake (strained abdomen) did not practice. He continues to be listed as day to day.

Nash and Blake have been ruled out for Tuesday's game against the Indiana Pacers.

"I told (Nash) and I told Steve Blake ... we've got 68 games left," D'Antoni said. "I'd rather them play (the) 61 final games instead of them playing six and then missing 20 and then playing the rest of them.

"It's important that they keep progressing. Whether they play Tuesday or Friday or next Saturday, it doesn't really matter where (they come back). It's that when they play, the rest of the time they're ready to roll."

Nash has increased his activity but still hasn't practiced with the team. He's accompanying the Lakers on their current road trip but isn't expected to play.

Normally, a coach wants an injured player to get a full practice in before greenlighting a return. Coach Mike D'Antoni is still feeling out the situation.

"I don't know," D'Antoni said earlier in the week. "I can't see in the immediate future him coming right, but I could see him coming back in a week or so."

The difficulty is finding time in the schedule to run a practice.

"We have one in Oklahoma City," D'Antoni said, referring to Thursday, but will he do that to the team after back-to-back games in Houston and New Orleans?

If Nash can get cleared to practice on either Dec. 8 or 10, perhaps he'll be cleared before the team's four-game road trip that extends through Dec. 16.

Full practices will be few and far between, although D'Antoni noted that he's not against scheduling a small one if and when Nash is ready.

"He can go three-on-three, even if the other guys can't practice," D'Antoni said. "On the day of a game, we can play him with other guys. We can get something in, even if we have a game that night."

BTW anyone hear Pringles say Nash could fix the Lakers problems "in an hour and a half?" Fix the defense problem first Pringles.
