Coaching Staff
something Steve Kerr called out last night during the game: D'Antoni is basically forced to use Brown's hand picked staff instead of his own guys
poor strateegery? I suspect so - thoughts? |

Re: Coaching Staff
How is he forced? They told him he could bring in anybody he wanted but he decided to use those guys. The only person he brought in was his brother.

Re: Coaching Staff
I thought that was weird when it happened. I guess Antoni doesnt have a team of his own assistant coaches to bring.

One of his closest assistants in New York was Mike Woodson, who obviously wasn't going to leave the head coaching position in New York to join D'Antoni in Los Angeles as an assistant. Other than that, he probably just was relaxing and not considering a coaching job until the Lakers called. |

Re: Coaching Staff
Weren't there talks about "No-D" Antoni wanting to hire a defensive-minded assistant coach when he took over?

Re: Coaching Staff
yeah 'forced' might be the wrong word and there was talk in the media about Nate McMillan not sure that was sourced talk though - but I guess what Im still trying to get at is that this staff is not his guys, they're Mike Brown's guys - for instance Eddie Jordan was brought on to coach the princeton, now what good is he?
and as an aside I've always had a measure of cognitive dissonance when thinking about Chuck 'The Rifleman' Person teaching anyone anything about defense |

Re: Coaching Staff
I was actually happy they kept the old staff... helps to have some continuity instead of a whole new staff and roster learning each other out in the middle of the year.
Still contend it was only worth firing Brown to bring in Phil, but at least they did it early enough. What's dissapointing is the rest of you won't learn from this, and will continue to put far too much blame on coaches. As I said back when Brown was coaching, if the Lakers fire him you guys would still complain endlessly about his replacement.

Re: Coaching Staff
my problem with the Phil thing is this - this team when theyre losing look an awful lot like the last phil jackson team I saw on the floor only this team is missing key components and is older and phil had no such excuses
in other words the last phil I saw wasnt the phil he used to be either |
