Ricky Rubio defends Pau Gasol

MINNEAPOLIS -- Ricky Rubio is standing up for his fellow Spaniard Pau Gasol, saying he doesn't think it's fair that the Los Angeles Lakers are bringing Gasol off the bench this season.

Rubio spoke after practice on Thursday, one day before his Minnesota Timberwolves were scheduled to host the Lakers. Rubio says he speaks to Gasol and the other Spanish players in the NBA regularly throughout the season. He says Gasol has proven himself as a top-flight player in this league over the years.

He quipped that "if they don't want him, we are more than welcome to get him."

Gasol has been mentioned in the rumor mill for the last few seasons. The Timberwolves have often been mentioned as a possible destination if the Lakers decide to part with him.

Toronto still interested in Gasol.

The Toronto Raptors were linked with the Los Angeles Lakers last year when they apparently offered a package of Andrea Bargnani, Jose Calderon and Linas Kleiza for Pau Gasol. The Lakers, reportedly, declined.

Some would assume that, now the Raptors landed their big name in Rudy Gay, they’d be done making big trades.

However, according to Marc Stein, the Raptors are still pursuing L.A.’s Spaniard:

Raptors president Bryan Colangelo, in the wake of the Gay trade, is now openly acknowledging that he’s shopping former No. 1 overall pick Andrea Bargnani. The Lakers’ interest in Bargnani remains a matter of debate in the midst of the Italian’s worst-ever season by far, but the not-for-public-consumption message that continues to emanate from Canada is that Toronto remains intent on pursuing Gasol even after trading for Gay.

At a news conference Friday, Colangelo acknowledged that the Raptors are prepared to stray into luxury-tax territory in the “right transaction.” One source close to the situation says Gasol is a guy who fits those parameters, depending on the rest of potential trade principals besides Bargnani.

Now, two key pieces have departed Toronto as part of the three-team deal to land Gay: Calderon and Ed Davis. You’d have to think that the Lakers would’ve wanted those two guys in a trade – or at least one of them – if they were going to take on Bargnani.

It didn’t seem like the Lakers were too keen to take on Bargnani last year, so there’s nothing now to say that’s changed. He’s having the worst season of his career, he’s making quite a lot of money and doesn’t play a lick of defense. You could see where he could fit in D’Antoni’s system, stretching the floor for Dwight Howard, but he’s such a big liability on the other end of the floor.

If the Lakers were to take on Bargnani, the Raptors would have to make it worth their while by adding a youngster like DeMar DeRozan or Terrence Ross, though Ross was apparently off-limits in the talks for Gay, so why would that change for Gasol?

Stein doesn’t see Gasol being moved before the deadline, though, due to the uncertainty surrounding Howard and his pending free agency this summer.

The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in trading point guard Steve Nash to the Indiana Pacers for two dynamic players. Is it possible that Los Angeles would double-cross Nash like this?
Lakers general manager Mike Kupchak has insisted over and over again that he has no intentions of making any bold moves before the Feb. 21 NBA trade deadline, especially deals involving Nash or center Dwight Howard. However, ESPN reported that there is some truth to the rumors circulating about a Los Angeles-Indiana blockbuster trade that could result in both teams gaining a significant edge in their respective conference.
The deal would involve sending Nash to the Pacers in exchange for point guard George Hill and small forward Danny Granger. Obviously, Granger has not played at all this season due to a knee injury, but several reports suggest he will be making his debut soon.
This trade would benefit Indiana in a big way by giving the team a solid point guard who could flourish in the Pacers system. Center Roy Hibbert and small forward Paul George would become even more of a threat on the court with Nash dishing them the ball. This has to be intriguing for the 39-year-old as he will finally be able to get spread his wings again and play up to his abilities instead of shedding skin for Kobe Bryant.
Nash’s numbers this season (11.8 points, 7.4 assists) are the lowest he has put up per game in a long time. It would be one thing if the Lakers were dominating their foes like they were supposed to, but it is another when they are 10th in the Western Conference standings.
Hibbert, George and the rest of the Pacers would learn more than they could handle from Nash and the franchise would benefit from it long after the 16-year veteran hangs it up. Indiana is also a contender in the Eastern Conference as they currently sit in the third seed with a 32-21 record. Time is running out for Nash to win an NBA championship and as weird as it is to say, he has a better shot with the Pacers then the Lakers from the look of it.
Los Angeles would also hugely benefit from acquiring a very talented young point guard who has plenty of tread left on the tires. The 26-year-old Hill is posting career numbers this season as he is averaging 14.7 points and 4.9 assists per game while shooting 44.1 percent from the floor. Those numbers will most likely go down playing with Bryant, but at least the Lakers will have a sure thing at point guard for the foreseeable future.
Even though Granger has not played all season and it is unknown how much of an effect his knee injury will have on his game, Los Angeles is still getting a legitimate scorer (18.2 career points per game). This trade could single-handedly get the Lakers back on track and give them the extra tools they need to make a run at a postseason berth.
One thing worth pointing out is that the Pacers will want something more than just Nash coming their way for good reason. One rumor is that Metta World Peace could be the guy to seal the deal for Los Angeles, but I cannot imagine a world in which Indiana accepts the small forward’s return with arms wide open. Therefore, the Lakers would have to figure out another player to complete the deal or send draft picks.

That would be pretty sweet if it were true. I seriously doubt it though. Im pretty sure Nash would have to sign off on this deal. Not contractually, just because I dont think the Lakers would do him like that.

The Pacers are third in the East and at this moment a far better shot at getting into the finals than we are. I don't think Nash would mind.

Nash came to LA to stay close to his kids and have a chance to win, in that order. I dont think for a second he would be happy to go to Indy like the writer says just because he will have a bigger role. He's 39, he doesnt give a rats ass how big or small his role would be. All he would care about is that it adds an extra 1.5 hours to his flights to PHX to visit his kids

Does anyone else think that Boston might be the perfect trading partner for Pau over the offseason? They can give us the athleticism and youth we need, while we can give them another reason to keep their veteran heavy roster intact for one more year.

I actually think we'd amnesty MWP there and look to sign a more sure-fire three-point shooter with the MMLE (i.e. Korver). The team could use one more athletic big for depth, along with another wing, but a healthy Dwight makes them a WC favorite, IMO.
