Lakers are 15-8 when which player gets 14+ minutes?
Darius Morris doesn't have the eye-popping stats that stat gurus crave. When you watch him in games he can look a little out-of-sink at both ends, yet despite his flaws there is one stat area that shouldn't be ignored. The Lakers have 15 wins to 8 losses in games in which he plays at least 14 minutes. They have 2 wins to 14 losses when he plays less than 14 minutes, and are winless when he plays less than 7 minutes. In the Lakers season best 5 game win streak Morris averaged 15.4 minutes.
Maybe those W-L numbers are just a fluke, but I think Morris is a key ingredient to improving the team chemistry. I believe his constant effort is a catalyst for the Lakers effort as a team. Despite his weaknesses, he should get heavy minutes. If his more skilled teammates get spurred on by his effort on defense, the team as a whole will make up for his turnovers and fouls. |

It's strange that your first post on the site is a poll about Darius Morris' PT, but welcome anyway! How long have you been a Laker fan?

I like it. Those intro threads are boring anyway. Welcome!

I have to say they are a fluke. A lot of those games were home games against lottery teams.
His decision making is the worst, he can't finish a fast break, is slow off the dribble for a PG. He does hit open shots and is a decent defender though.

Now that you say it, he does remind me of a Derek Fisher circa 99. Just taller and maybe a slightly better playmaker.

What fluky numbers, indeed. It means the Lakers are 2-14 on the other side of the coin.
But it means nothing, really. Morris has mostly unimpressed me. He doesn't get back on defense on every play, inciting D'Antoni's wrath. The kid has to work harder on D and for damn sure he needs to stop taking stupid 3s with 21 seconds on the shot clock. |

Darius Morris needs to not get any playing time once Blake gets back.

I think Morris is probably our 2nd best defensive player against guards, next to Kobe. That probably does have something to do with it.

Re: Lakers are 15-8 when which player gets 14+ minutes?
I really don't think the numbers are a fluke. Even after Nash returned and Morris moved to SG the trend continued 3-2 when he played 14 minutes, 2-7 when he didn't. He is the best PG defender on the team, and he should spend most of his floor time guarding that position even if he plays SG on offense. He is the only player on the team who holds opposing PGs to below average PER. Slowing down the opposing PG is a great way to keep opponent scores down. For whatever reason the Lakers play defense when Morris gets minutes. In the 17 games he has had less than 14 minutes the Lakers gave up 108.1 PPG. In the 23 games he has played 14+ minutes the Lakers gave up only 96.8 PPG. There has to be something to it. Defense is the team's biggest weakness, and Kobe's minutes totals are taking a toll. Giving Morris more PT is an answer to both issues. I think Morris, Meeks, and Clark should be the main guys off the bench. They would bring more energy, hustle, and defense, and some decent shooting skills as well.
