Stat Geeks

Does anyone else confused as hell when people use PER as an argument? I have no clue WTF it is. I love reading player comparison threads, like the Payton/Wade one in NBA General right now. But as I read on, I notice PER PER PER PER PER.

82games.com is a basketball nerd's wet dream.

But do any of you feel like a total idiot when you people's arguments using those crazy stats? I can't really dissect a player using stats, I just give my opinion on him with the games I've seen him play. I just think sometimes people get too caught up in statistical basketball jargon and don't watch the players play.

Maybe its just me...

Well yeah, I guess this was some sort of rant, lol.

Re: Stat Geeks

Again, this damn PER thing:
http://basketballboards.net/forum/sh...d.php?t=267193

Do these people watch games? Sometimes stats are useful, but threads like those are the reasons why I loathe some stat geeks. It's like they say player x is good because his y is 100.4. I don't know, I evaluate players by watching them play, not what their PER or on/off court efficency is.

/end rant

Re: Stat Geeks

Yeah, its pretty annoying. You can't really determine the true value of a player with statistics. IMO, you can't measure defense in statistics whatsoever.

I hate people who use these things to try to back up their statements.

Re: Stat Geeks

Yeah, it can get really annoying. I kinda used to be that way, even though I follow stats somewhat closely now. I find it more useful to actually use how I've seen them play as the evidence. Mainly because someone can put up the best efficiency in the world on offense with Points, assists, rebounds, FG%, etc, but the team does absolutely nothing. That would mean that basically that player makes almost no impact whatsoever. Stephon Marbury and Steve Francis are pretty darn good examples of that.
