Royals' Joakim Soria out for season

SURPRISE, Ariz. -- Kansas City Royals closer Joakim Soria will undergo reconstructive elbow surgery and will miss the season.

The surgery is scheduled for April 3.

Soria made the decision Friday after being examined by Dr. James Andrews in Birmingham, Ala., for a third opinion. He had already been diagnosed with right elbow ligament damage by the Royals physicians and Dr. Lewis Yocum, who will perform the surgery in Los Angeles.

Soria left the game Sunday against Cleveland with pain in his elbow. Soria, a two-time All-Star, who has 160 saves the past five seasons, also missed the 2003 season while recovering from Tommy John surgery.

Manager Ned Yost said in Soria's absence the three candidates to close games for the Royals are Jonathan Broxton, Greg Holland and Aaron Crow.

Kendrys Morales is 4 out of his first 5 AB. Hit a homer tonight. Went first to third on a double yesterday with a slide and looked good doing so.

How do you see the East shaking out?

I go Nationals, then Braves, then Marlins. Obviously, the Mets will be in last and the Phils will be in first.

No clue. I would be surprised if the Phillies didn't win it and the Mets weren't one of the worst teams in all of baseball, but outside of that the Marlins, Braves and Nationals could finish in any order. I think there's a pretty good chance both NL Wildcards come out of the East though.

A lot of it has to do with health. Health is obviously always important, but when you look at a team like the Marlins, arguably their three best and most important players are huge health question marks -- Jose Reyes, Hanley Ramirez and Josh Johnson. The same goes for Washington pretty much. I like what they're doing, but keeping Zimmerman and Strasburg out there (a big if) is vital.

Atlanta will be good, Freddie Freeman is going to become a household name. Heyward will be a lot better than last year. The starting pitching will be good, the bullpen will be phenomenal. I think they probably have the lowest ceiling and the highest floor of the three teams. You kinda know what they're going to be.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how it all shakes up.

It's kind of pointless how many okay, but not great starting pitchers Atlanta has. With Livan Hernandez, Atlanta now has nine guys who could start a game for you (Hudson, Hanson, Beachy, Minor, Jurrjens, Hernandez, Medlen, Delgado, Teheran) but none of them will go the distance. They'll get you to the 6th inning, and we'll probably have to overwork our bullpen and see them hit a wall in September again.

Four of those are injury prone and two others are young/not ready yet, but we should have made a trade or two.

A couple of those guys should develop into very good starters as soon as this year though. Beachy is nasty, he could be a breakout player. Hanson is still young and could put it all together.

At least you're not depending on Big Z.
