Veteran Orlando Hudson, brought to the White Sox on May 22 as a free agent, has started 25 games at third base, the first he's played at that position over his 11-year career.
While the White Sox have a 13-11 record with Hudson in the lineup, he is hitting .167 since coming to Chicago and his defense has been a work in progress. Eduardo Escobar has played 10 games at third and carries a .190 average, while Lillibridge has started six games there and has a .175 mark.
This present campaign has not been a good one for Youkilis, who is a career .286 hitter with a .388 on-base percentage. Youkilis was sidelined for nearly a month by a back strain and has not exactly seen eye-to-eye with new manager Bobby Valentine, while putting up a .233 average with four homers and 14 RBIs. The Boston starting third-base job has been claimed by rookie Will Middlebrooks, making Youkilis expendable. The White Sox hope a change of scenery will bring back the form that made Youkilis a three-time All-Star.
In the final year of a four-year, $41.125 million extension, Youkilis is earning $12 million. He has an option for $13 million for 2013, with a $1 million buyout.

It was no secret we had to get rid of Youk, so we were never going to get much in return. I'm fine with the trade.

Orlando Hudson's D has actually been surprisingly good at 3b, considering he's never played there before... the fact that he's hitting .167 kind of outweighs that, unfortunately. Zach Stewart is a decent young pitcher with some upside but he's been inconsistent at the major league level for the pale hose. Brett Lillibridge, the other guy we gave up, is actually a pretty useful utility player who can play pretty much any position on the field with the exception of catcher. He's got a surprising amount of pop for a guy his size moves pretty well in the field and on the basepaths, though he's not an elite level athlete or anything.

I'm willing to roll the dice on Youkilis... I haven't really been following his struggles so I'm not quite sure what his deal is... frankly, after watching Brett Morel man the hot corner for the last year and a half I'm open to this sort of move.

its a good buy low for the white sox, bostons picking up a bunch of money and the white sox didnt give up anything of value in return... boston just cleaned up a clubhouse headache by fully clearing the way for middlebrooks...good move for both teams

Boston's just continuing to slash their payroll. Like most Red Sox fans I felt that the compensation for the Cubs signing Epstein should have been him taking either Crawford or Lackey with him. Those contracts continue to be the gift that keeps on giving.
