In a way the deal can be defended as a baseball move. They spent all that money and ended up with a 69 win team and piss poor attendance. Unless you're banking on the team improving dramatically next year they had to make some changes. I don't know if these are the right changes but it's not like they took apart a good team.

The funny thing is attendance was actually pretty good until the team fell off a cliff and into the cellar of the NL East. Loria and Samson have no one to blame for that but themselves. That's what happens when you consistently suck at drafting and evaluating talent for nearly a decade. You can be willing to spend the money, but when you do stupid shit like signing John Buck to a big 4 year deal and a fat, 35 year old closer to a big 3 year deal while having little to no homegrown talent to fill out a roster, yea you're going to suck.

Marlins recent 1st round picks:
2002 - Jeremy Hermida
2003 - Jeffrey Allison
2004 - Taylor Tankersley
2005 - Chris Volstad, Aaron Thompson, Jacob Marceaux, Ryan Tucker, Sean West
2006 - Brett Sinkbeil, Chris Coghlan
2007 - Matt Dominguez
2008 - Kyle Skipworth
2009 - Chad James

I won't list the last couple because it's unrealistic to expect them to have done anything yet, but you get the point. And yes, they had FIVE first round picks in 2005 and the best of the bunch went winless in like 24 consecutive starts or something between 2011 and 2012 and absolutely sucks. Where's the accountability there? Why has there been so little turnover in management? Why can Samson, Hill and Beinfest consistently prove they suck at their jobs yet stick around? Meanwhile, Ozzie Guillen gets one year, Jose Reyes and Mark Buehrle are shipped out for crap after one year and nothing is going to change.

God damnit, I'm going to go call Samson again!

It's too bad that MLB does not have a legitimate Commissioner instead of a Bagman for the owners like Selig. There is no way that this trade would ever get league approval if you had a league office that actually cared about the game like the Commissioner is supposed to do in the historical context of the office.
