Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

Quote:
It's been nearly 20 years since anyone could say, with a straight face, that the Toronto Blue Jays were favorites to win the World Series. Not since Joe Carter, Paul Molitor, Rickey Henderson and Roberto Alomar. But after a series of sexy moves made by GM Alex Anthopoulos, the Jays have become the best bet to win it all — so says that bastion of gambling enlightenment, Fabulous Las Vegas, Nev.

The Jays, who added the likes of R.A. Dickey, Josh Johnson, Jose Reyes, Mark Buehrle and Melky Cabrera this offseason, have been posted as 15-2 favorites to take the Commissioner's Trophy back to Ontario next October by the Bovada Sportsbook.

Las Vegas thinks so apparently. What about you?

This does have the feel of those early 90's teams, but I still say no. I would be thrilled with a playoff appearance though. We haven't had one since winning in 1993.

Re: Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

To me it comes down to if they can stay healthy and if Ricky Romero + Josh Johnson can bounce back.

If both of those things happen, I see them being a serious threat.

Re: Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

If JJ and R-Square can bounce back, then Dickey really is the ideal pitcher for them. Since he's sold out to the knuckler he's turned into a Wakefieldesque innings eater. I'll be the first to tell you that his results last year are flukey (that is a Cy Young year with a 20-6 record). But the one thing he is going to do for the Blue Jays staff is eat up 220-240 innings while providing them with solid performance for most of it (he's basically mid-career Wakefield that's mastered late career Wakefield's "fastball" to go along with the Candiotti hard knuckler). That's a huge advantage for Toronto.

They need to add a arm to that bullpen. But if Josh Johnson and Jose Bautista return to form of past season and Edwin Encarnacion has a repeat season then yes they will

Re: Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

I have seen teams go out and blow their wad on a bunch of good names and have it backfire on them. On the surface these moves seem great but they still have to go out there and do it. Favorites? Not yet... Contenders? Absolutely

Re: Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

Dickey doesn't get you there by himself, but they have the pieces. It just has to work together and we'll have to see that team on the field before we can tell. People thought the Marlins were a great team on paper last year and it turned out a bit differently.

AA said he's planning on adding one more arm to the bullpen so we'll see who that is.

All the odds makers have them as the WS favorite which I think is absurd.

Re: Does RA Dickey make the Blue Jays World Series Favorites?

They've certainly made themselves contenders and put as good of a team on paper as anyone in the league, but that doesn't make them the favorites. I haven't looked at any of the odds yet, but if it were me they'd be up there in the top group with the Giants, Tigers, Angels, Yankees, Reds and Nationals with all roughly the same odds.

On paper the team doesn't really have any holes so I wouldn't call it absurd.

That doesn't mean their the favorites to win, that means they are contenders.

So how is a contender being considered a favorite "absurd"?
