Many Happy Returns
Estrada, Evans give Sounders 2-1 win over Santos Laguna

SEATTLE – Few people expected David Estrada to score first. Even fewer expected him to score on a header.

Seattle’s diminutive striker scored his first professional goal at an opportune time, staking the Sounders to a 1-0 lead en route to a 2-1 victory on Wednesday night in the first leg of their CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal series. Santos Laguna striker Herculez Gomez and Seattle’s Brad Evans traded goals two minutes apart in the second half in front of 23,433 fans at CenturyLink Field

Zakuani healthy, happy after reserve stint vs. Gonzaga

TUKWILA, Wash. — The rain was coming down pretty heavily and temperatures were in the low 40s during the Seattle Sounders’ training session on Tuesday.

Steve Zakuani couldn’t have been happier.

The 24-year-old midfielder was training at full speed two days after appearing in a game situation as a member of the Sounders reserves, who played Gonzaga University on Sunday. There were no apparent ill effects from his 45-minute appearance, marking a huge step forward as Zakuani continues to work his way back from the compound leg fracture that he suffered nearly a year ago.

“Before, I didn’t want to be out there training on days like this,” Zakuani told MLSsoccer.com on Tuesday. “Now, put me out there in rain, hail, snow whatever, I’ve really re-found my love and appreciation for football.

Rematch With Chelsea Is A Special Opportunity

After striking up a great relationship with Chelsea in 2009, the Sounders FC will face the English giants again this summer.
In his downtime, Fredy Montero can often be found playing FIFA on his Xbox 360.

He virtually plays with and against some of the top teams in the world. So when he has the opportunity to physically go toe-to-toe with those players that he controls in the video game world, it’s quite the experience for the 24 year old Sounders forward.

Sounders' Johnson fined for innappropriate gesture

NEW YORK – A day after the Fire's Frank Klopas and Jalil Anibaba learned their punishments for their roles in a postgame dust-up between Chicago and Seattle, the MLS Disciplinary Committee fined Sounders forward Eddie Johnson an undisclosed amount for making an inappropriate gesture directed at fans as he was leaving the field after the match.

Johnson scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal in the second half of Seattle's 2-1 win over the Fire, but was punished by the Committee for making the gesture to fans at Toyota Park while exiting the field into the tunnel. He was not suspended for the incident.

King of Cascadia

Fredy Montero credits the road support as one of the greatest motivating factors throughout his career when playing a big rival, as he will on Saturday when the Sounders meet the Whitecaps for the first time in 2012.

Real American Hero?
Alonso gets US citizenship, but can he play for Klinsmann?

What if Osvaldo Alonso played for the US national team?
Suddenly that just might be a possibility.

The Seattle Sounders midfielder spoke to the media on Tuesday about the news that he received his US citizenship last week, and that there’s a chance he could get his chance to play for head coach Jurgen Klinsmann's side.

Of course there's a logjam at the holding midfielder spot right now, and there's an issue because Alonso played for his native Cuba in the 2007 Gold Cup before defecting, but as head coach Sigi Schmid says, Alonso’s new US citizenship “opens up new doors for him and new options."

WFC:
Lukaku nets brace as Chelsea down Sounders 4-2

Forward Romelu Lukaku scored two goals as European champions Chelsea registered a 4-2 victory over MLS side Seattle Sounders in the opening match of the 2012 Herablife World Football Challenge on Wednesday night at Century Field.

The English giants received a solid debut from two of their high-profile newcomers, Marko Marin and Eden Hazard, who also scored as all the goals came in an explosive first half. Fredy Montero tallied two of his own for Seattle, who had momentarily equalized at 2-2.

Chelsea came out firing from the opening whistle. Marin exposed the Sounders’ right flank after just 48 seconds, forcing Sounders goalkeeper Bryan Meredith into an early save. That sector of the field would be a problem all night for Seattle.

Busy Sounders negotiating to acquire Honduran Olympian

SEATTLE -- No team underwent more of a face-lift on the final day of the MLS transfer window than the Seattle Sounders.

Over the span of a few hours, they traded Designated Player Alvaro Fernandez to the Chicago Fire, signed FC Kaiserslautern’s Christian Tiffert, and entered into “advanced negotiations” with a 22-year-old Honduran Olympian Mario Martinez.

“To be totally honest, it’s been an absolutely chaotic, hectic 3-4 days,” Sounders General Manager Adrian Hanauer said on a Friday conference call. “I’m fairly certain I’ve developed a brain tumor from being on the phone for so many hours.

Seattle rip Galaxy apart in 4-0 thrashing
in front of 60,908

SEATTLE — In a showdown between two of the hottest teams in MLS, the drama was extinguished early. The Seattle Sounders opened the scoring in the 6th minute and all but ended it with a pair of goals 10 minutes apart early in the second half to coast to a 4-0 win over the LA Galaxy in front of 60,908 fans at CenturyLink Field on Sunday.

The Sounders got goals from Eddie Johnson, Fredy Montero, Alex Caskey and Andy Rose and a pair of assists from Mauro Rosales as they basically had their way with a team that came into the game riding a five-match unbeaten streak.
