Re: The Philadelphia Union

I'm excited. I don't have much of a history watching soccer but the fact that it's a local team and the games are affordable I might just up and buy season tickets and become a fan.

Can't wait for the stadium to be finished in Chester.

The Philadelphia Union announced today a partnership with the Harrisburg City Islanders of the USL Second Division, further extending the Major League Soccer club’s player development model. The City Islanders will be Philadelphia Union’s Exclusive USL-2 Affiliate Club.

“Player development is a key component to building the quality club and organization we will be,” explained Nick Sakiewicz, CEO & Operating Partner of Philadelphia Union. “With the Harrisburg City Islanders and our previously announced relationship with Reading United AC, Philadelphia Union Team Manager Peter Nowak will instill ‘first team’ principles in training and playing attacking, attractive football throughout Pennsylvania that our supporters will truly enjoy. We’re eager to get going.”

Re: The Philadelphia Union

he Philadelphia Union held its final preseason practice under cloudy skies yesterday, but it was the team's first official meeting without the cloud of collective bargaining talks hanging overhead.
Now, the team is focused on finalizing the roster for Major League Soccer's roster compliance deadline tomorrow, but more importantly putting together the definitive starting 11 for Thursday's opener against Seattle.

One player who definitely won't be on the field for the league opener is Fred, the crafty Brazilian midfielder the Union acquired from D.C. United just hours before January's MLS SuperDraft. Fred will serve a one-game suspension from a red-card infraction he picked up in the 92nd minute of D.C.'s regular-season finale against Kansas City last season. League rules dictate that two yellow cards, which amount to a red, are not transferable, but bona fide red cards do rollover.

don't know yet
the combination of vets and draft choices have to be able to meld together into a team
too early to tell
they need real game experiences together

Re: The Philadelphia Union

They had over 34K in attendance at yesterday's opener at the Linc. Looks like it might be harder to get my hands on tickets at PPL park than I anticipated.

Re: The Philadelphia Union

The quality of MLS is much lower than what you will see in European or even South American leagues (it's like comparing amateur sports to professional sports), but I strongly recommend you see a match live. I've been to a couple of Galaxy fixtures and thoroughly enjoyed them both. I even dragged along a few friends who only like the sport in video game form and think it's not worth watching on tv outside of highlights and they had a blast as well. And they're the type who get angry if you call the sport football and not soccer too, so needless to say, their reaction surprised me.
