Quakes close in on Shield after sweeping Seattle
Make it a clean sweep.

Before the season few expected the San Jose Earthquakes to win every one of their three matches against the Seattle Sounders, including two at CenturyLink Field. But the Quakes completed the feat on Saturday with a 2-1 triumph.

Chris Wondolowski scored his 10th game-winner this season (a new MLS record) and extended his lead in the Golden Boot race. The frontrunner for MVP credited the Seattle crowd for their part in his performance: "When you have a good atmosphere, it helps raise my level, I think. It makes me want to raise it a little extra notch."

The Sounders, whose last loss came against the Earthquakes, were missing star players Eddie Johnson and Mauro Rosales. But manager Sigi Schmid wasn’t about to make excuses: "We would have been overrun even with Eddie and Mauro,” he said. "They killed us in the first half, to be quite honest. If we play like we played in the first half, we won't go very far [in the playoffs]."

Recap: Quakes come back again in wild 3-3 tie with FCD

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – The Goonies’ legend just keeps growing – as does FC Dallas’ frustration.

Steven Lenhart bagged a late brace, including a 95th-minute equalizer, as the San Jose Earthquakes came back twice in the second half to force a 3-3 tie with FC Dallas on Saturday.

Lenhart headed home a ball flicked on by Alan Gordon, from a cross by Justin Morrow, to keep San Jose’s unbeaten streak at Buck Shaw Stadium intact. The Earthquakes have gone 11-0-6 at their primary venue since Aug. 13, 2011.

San Jose (18-6-7) inched to three points ahead of Sporting Kansas City in the Supporters’ Shield standings. The Quakes need to hold on for three more matches to claim their first hardware since returning to the league as an expansion team in 2008.

Recap:
Wondo hat trick paces Quakes to 4-1 win vs. Rapids

COMMERCE CITY, Colo. — Chris Wondolowski’s record-breaking hat trick helped the San Jose Earthquakes to an easy 4-1 win over the Colorado Rapids on Saturday night while helping San Jose take a step closer to the Supporters' Shield on an unseasonably brisk evening at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Wondolowski’s three goals helped him break San Jose’s franchise record for all-time goals scored, and also helped the Earthquakes move six points above Sporting Kansas City for the Supporters Shield with two games to go, although Sporting plays Columbus Sunday afternoon and have three games left on their schedule. The win did, however, clinch the top spot in the Western Conference playoffs for San Jose.

Recap:
Wondo gets No. 26 as Quakes, Galaxy draw 2-2

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — One goal back, one game to play.

San Jose Earthquakes striker Chris Wondolowski moved to within one goal of tying the MLS’ all-time single-season scoring mark, heading home his 26th of the season to force a 2-2 tie against the LA Galaxy on Sundayat Buck Shaw Stadium.

Wondolowski, who also hit the post twice in as many minutes during the second half, needs two goals next weekend at Portland to beat the current mark of 27 goals, set by Tampa Bay’s Roy Lassiter in 1996.

Wondolowski moved into a tie for second place on the league’s all-time scoring list, matching the 26 goals tallied by Stern John for Columbus in 1998 and Mamadou Diallo for Tampa Bay in 2000.

Robbie Keane scored his 12th goal in 15 matches and Edson Buddle, making his first start since since May 26, nodded in his third of the season to stake the Galaxy to a pair of second-half leads.

Quakes get Fucito from Timbers for second-round pick

Thursday's MLS SuperDraft action got off to an early start as the Portland Timbers sent well-traveled forward Mike Fucito down the West Coast to San Jose for the Earthquakes' second-round pick (No. 34 overall) in the draft.

The Quakes now have the right of first refusal to Fucito and may negotiate a contract.

Fucito, 26, joined the Timbers via trade from the Montreal Impact on April 20, 2012, and appeared in 12 games (three starts) for Portland during the 2012 MLS regular season. The four-year MLS veteran has played 36 career regular-season matches for Seattle Sounders FC (2009-11), Montreal (2012) and Portland (2012), recording three goals and two assists.

San Jose adds veteran defenders Dan Gargan and Ty Harden

The San Jose Earthquakes announced the signing of a pair of defenders on Friday, including center back Ty Harden and right back Dan Gargan. Per league and team policy, terms of the deals were not disclosed.

“Both Dan and Ty are veterans who know the league well,” said Earthquakes head coach Frank Yallop. “They’re solid, dependable players who will help manage our additional workload this season with CONCACAF Champions League games to play. We’re happy to have them in the fold.”

San Jose lock up Wondolowski to Designated Player deal after record-setting season

The San Jose Earthquakes announced Tuesday that the club has signed forward Chris Wondolowski to a new contract, making him the second Designated Player in club history. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Wondolowski, 30, is the reigning Volkswagen MLS Most Valuable Player after tying the league record for goals in a season with 27 in 2012. He has led the league in goals for three consecutive years, earning three MLS Best XI selections in the process. The two-time MLS All-Star is also the all-time league leader in goals per 90 minutes among players with at least 100 appearances with a 0.64 clip.

San Jose Earthquakes part ways with longtime head coach Frank Yallop

Less than a year removed from a stunning run to the Supporters’ Shield, the San Jose Earthquakes announced Friday that they have parted ways with head coach Frank Yallop.

Assistant coach Mark Watson has been named the interim head coach for the remainder of the 2013 season for the Quakes, who have struggled to find the same form this season after posting the best regular-season record in Major League Soccer last season.

San Jose are just 3-6-6 this year despite returning the bulk of their lineup, and are currently winless in their past four matches. Watson will make his debut when the Quakes return to action on June 15 at the Colorado Rapids.

Yallop said in a statement that he met with team president David Kaval and general manager John Doyle earlier this week, and the three men agreed it was time for the club to move in a different direction.

San Jose Earthquakes sign U.S. international Clarence Goodson

The 31-year-old center back did not need to go through allocation, as the Earthquakes had been holding onto his MLS rights ever since they picked him in the 2007 expansion draft.

New Stadium now set to open in second half of 2014 season

SAN JOSE, Calif. – The San Jose Earthquakes announced that due to unforeseen conditions at the stadium site, the team is pushing back the opening date of their new stadium to the second half of the 2014 season. With the change in opening date, the team will play eight games at Buck Shaw Stadium, one game at Stanford Stadium and nine games at the new stadium next season.

“Due to the extraordinary conditions at the stadium site the opening date has been pushed back,” said Earthquakes President Dave Kaval. “Our ownership group and organization is committed to building a world-class venue for our fans and to creating the true epicenter of soccer in the Bay Area. We feel that a second-half opening ensures that we accomplish that goal, while giving our team a strong home schedule for the best situation competitively.”

2014 San Jose Earthquakes Preview:
Cage matches and injury curses for the Goonies

100 percent Wondo: After tying the league record with 27 goals in the 2012 season, Chris Wondolowski got a fat new Designated Player contract and a subsequent drop in production. He banged home just 11 in 2013 as the Quakes went dry in front of net. Part of the reason was physical: He spent most of the year playing on a broken toe. He's healthy now, though, and started 2013 off in good form with a brace for the USMNT vs. South Korea.
