On The Move

Montreal take EJ, but a trade is on the way

The Montreal Impact pulled the trigger and used their top spot in the allocation order to pick up one-time USMNT star Eddie Johnson. But don't bet on EJ taking up French lessons just yet as it seems Jesse Marsch is using him as trade bait.

Montreal send Johnson to Seattle for Neagle, Fucito

Moments after the Montreal Impact announced they had acquired former US international Eddie Johnson via the allocation process, the trade rumblings began.

Roughly an hour later, Johnson was on his way to the Pacific Northwest, as the Seattle Sounders sent Lamar Neagle and Mike Fucito to Montreal in exchange for the 27-year-old striker, who spent the past four years bouncing from club to club after Fulham brought him across the Atlantic in January 2008.

Simon Gatti announces retirement and joins the Academy
Accepted a position with the Academy as coach of the U14 team

“The decision was not an easy one for me because I would have loved to continue playing, but I felt this was the best thing for my future,” said Gatti. “I am excited to begin working with the club’s young players. I am proud to be a part of the very experienced technical staff with the Academy. I believe I have the tools to teach the kids what it takes to become a professional player.”

"We are very pleased to have Simon join our staff," said Academy director Philippe Eullaffroy. "His professional playing experience, his knowledge and love for the club, in combination with his motivation and open-mindedness will be great contributions to the development of the club's young players. He is definitely an added and valued asset to the Academy."

VWFC vs. IMFC - Round One

New striker stokes Vancouver-Montreal rivalry

Despite never meeting in MLS action, Montreal and Vancouver have an extensive history, with several folds added just this offseason. According to Etienne Barbara, who had to wriggle out of his obligation to the Impact, Vancouver snatched Montreal's first-choice coach, Martin Rennie. The Impact then turned to Jesse Marsch, but neither organization or the coaches have discussed the coup until Barbara dished.

On the opposite side is Lamar Neagle, fresh from his trade from Seattle. “In the long run, this is better for my career,” Neagle said. “The more minutes I get on the field, the better I’m going to be and the more money I can eventually make.”

The teams play tonight in the Disney Pro Soccer Classic (8 pm ET, MLSsoccer.com Channel 2), but don't expect a friendly tone from the two Canadian clubs. “You have to make tackles,” Donovan Ricketts said. “And if someone feels the tackle is unfair and then we take it over into the first game of the season, then it's already a derby game.”

The Montreal Impact drew 1-1 with Sporting KC today, in their second game of the Disney Pro Classic. Forward Mike Fucito opened the scoring for our team, after a great setup by Andrew Wenger, at the end of the first half. However, Sporting replied at the 70th minute, from a Soony Saad goal.
