Montreal trade GK Ricketts
to Portland for Perkins

Two of the leakiest teams in MLS now have new goalkeepers.

The Portland Timbers swapped goalkeepers with the Montreal Impact on Tuesday, sending Troy Perkins to the expansion club in exchange for Donovan Ricketts in one of the most high-profile goalkeeper trades in league history.

The move for the Timbers is seemingly motivated by on-field considerations and cap management.

“Troy has been an important player for us, but we as a coaching staff saw this as an opportunity to improve the position, while optimizing our budget numbers in 2012 and 2013," Timbers GM and interim manager Gavin Wilkinson said.

Impact coaches feel familiar face Perkins will add stability

MONTREAL – Most Montreal Impact players and staff will have to get used to a new face in the coming days, but Impact head coach Jesse Marsch and assistant Mike Sorber already know full well what they're getting in recently acquired goalkeeper Troy Perkins.

After all, both Marsch and Sorber got to know and esteem Perkins – whom the Portland Timbers traded to the Impact for goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts on Tuesday – during their time as assistants to Bob Bradley with the US national team.

Sorber sees Perkins as a solid technical goalkeeper with experience, good hands and an ability to come off his line – a more “by-the-book” goalkeeper than Ricketts, who is a “big play” ‘keeper, Marsch observed. Furthermore, both men feel Perkins' professionalism and on-field qualities will add stability to their team.

Highlights: MTL 1, NE 0
Third consecutive win for the Impact

FOXBORO, Massachusetts – The Montreal Impact shut out the New England Revolution 1-0, Sunday night at Gillette Stadium, in Foxboro Massachusetts, to earn a third win in a row for the first time this season and its second road victory of the year.

Second half substitute Sanna Nyassi, who came on to replace Justin Mapp, opened the scoring in the 61st minute when he stole the ball near his own 18 and made a fast break down field. Making a move to his right to beat defender A.J. Soares, Nyassi fired a right-footed blast from just outside the 18 -yard box that went top corner, left of Revs’ goalkeeper Matt Reis, to score his fifth of the year, second against the Revs and second on the road this season.

Milestone
First Canadian club to win 11 games

The Montreal Impact may be on the outside looking in to a playoff spot right now, but the team’s recent success has it closing in on more than just the post season, but a few milestones as well.

First Canadian side to win 11 games

With Saturday’s 3-1 win over San Jose, the Impact has become the first Canadian side to ever hit the 11-win plateau in Major League Soccer, surpassing the 10 victories Toronto FC picked up in 2009, and the 10 Vancouver has matched so far this season.

The Impact is also one victory shy of the top win totals for expansion teams in the new expansion era of MLS (since 2005), following the contraction of the Tampa Bay Mutiny and the Miami Fusion. Seattle managed 12 victories in 2009

Here We Come

Impact down DC for 5th straight win, move within reach of playoffs

The 2012 expansion side won their fifth straight league match and moved to within a point of D.C. United for the fifth and final playoff spot in the East with a 3-0 victory over United in front of a sell-out crowd on a hot Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo.

Designated Player Marco Di Vaio netted his third goal of the season on a classy finish and captain Patrice Bernier netted a brace after the break to secure the victory over a D.C. team which decided to rest reigning league MVP Dwayne De Rosario and leading scorer Chris Pontius during the first half.
