Promotion From Within
Red Bulls name Petke head coach after long, arduous search

After a lengthy search to find the brand new face of the New York Red Bulls, the club is moving forward with one of the most familiar figures in franchise history.

The Red Bulls announced on Thursday that assistant coach Mike Petke has been promoted to the club’s top spot for the 2013 season, 15 years after he broke into Major League Soccer as a hard-charging and devoted young defender for the New York/New Jersey MetroStars.

Petke, who turns 37 years old next week, becomes the third-youngest coach in the league behind D.C. United’s Ben Olsen and Toronto FC’s Ryan Nelsen, and the first American-born head coach in New York since the club parted ways with Bruce Arena in November 2007. He's also the 12th current coach in MLS who played in the league at some point in his career.

ROCKING ROBIN
Fraser named Red Bulls assistant coach

The Red Bulls continued to build their coaching staff on Wednesday as they officially announced today they have named former Chivas USA head Robin Fraser as an assistant coach.

Fraser, a 10-year Major League Soccer veteran, will be the No. 1 man behind head coach Mike Petke, who was named to that position last week.

New York City FC, Red Bulls rivalry heating up already

New York Red Bulls boss Mike Petke had some stern words for 2015 expansion side New York City FC: “They’re the new guys coming in and I'm looking forward to smashing them in 2015, to be honest with you. That’s it. I don’t have any love for [them] because it’s a new team in the league, I love this league, and I think expansion is a [good] thing but now that they have come where we are we’ll welcome them, hopefully, with a smashing.”

Red Bulls will continue to be the best here, but I love the fact that we're getting another team.

You can never have enough soccer squads in NY.

New York Red Bulls' Tim Cahill suffers torn PCL in right knee, faces 3-4 weeks out

The injury Tim Cahill suffered this past weekend will keep him out for more than just the MLS All-Star Game.

The New York Red Bulls announced via a conference call Tuesday afternoon that Cahill suffered a torn PCL in his right knee in the club’s 4-3 victory over Real Salt Lake on Saturday, and that the expected recovery time is three to four weeks. No surgery is needed on the injury, which Cahill suffered in the fourth minute of the match vs. RSL on a challenge from Yordany Alvarez.

CHAMPIONS!
Red Bulls beat Chicago 5-2, win first Supporters' Shield

HARRISON, NJ (October 27, 2013) – The New York Red Bulls won their first-ever MLS Supporters’ Shield Sunday evening in front of a sold-out crowd of 25,219 at Red Bull Arena, defeating the Chicago Fire 5-2. In a must-win situation, captain Thierry Henry scored New York’s first goal after the hosts went behind, while four other players found the back of the net as the Red Bulls, under first-year head coach and former New York standout defender Mike Petke, completed the regular season with an MLS-best 59 points and a 17-9-8 record.

By virtue of winning the Shield – given to the team with the most points in the regular season – the Red Bulls:

Red Bulls General Manager Jerome de Bontin resigns

A quiet offseason for the New York Red Bulls has just taken a tumultuous turn.

In a shock announcement, the 2013 Supporters’ Shield Champions revealed they have accepted the resignation of General Manager Jérôme de Bontin early Wednesday morning. He departs for what the club calls “personal reasons.”

“My assignment upon becoming General Manager of the Red Bulls was to help the club further increase its relevance in the tri-state area,” he said in a statement. “We wanted to improve our performance both on and off the field so that our loyal fans as well as new fans would have a club that lived up to their expectations as the best club in MLS.

New York Red Bulls ready to launch USL PRO side in 2015: "We see it as a big, big advantage"

If all goes according to plan, the New York Red Bulls will soon follow the footsteps of the LA Galaxy and field a team in USL PRO.

Red Bulls sporting director Andy Roxburgh said at the club’s media day on Tuesday that New York are currently well into the process of launching a third-division side, set to begin play next year. Roxburgh told reporters back in December that the Red Bulls had explored the possibility of launching a USL PRO club for 2014, but that they were not able to finalize the plans in time.

2014 New York Red Bulls Preview: Chemistry and continuity vs. the clock

Keep on holding on: Thierry Henry played a career-high (for MLS) 2519 minutes last season, and produced a very nice 10 goals and nine assists. Nice for most players, anyway. By Henry's standards ... well, it seemed readily apparent that he'd lost a step. He was still capable of magic, but wasn't able to pick his team up and carry them to results almost single-handed as he'd done for whole swathes of 2012.

New York Red Bulls,
Thierry Henry set to host Arsenal at Red Bull Arena in July

Each year, Thierry Henry finds a way to pop up at Arsenal. In 2014, it will be the Londoners who come to him.

On Thursday, the New York Red Bulls announced that they will face English Premier League club Arsenal FC on Saturday, July 26, at Red Bull Arena (5 pm ET). The match pits current New York captain and legendary Arsenal forward Henry against the club where he scored a record 226 goals in all competitions.
