Rennie Returns to WakeMed Park

TFC and the Vancouver Whitecaps revealed they will be closing out their 2012 preseason in Carolina, where new Whitecaps manager Martin Rennie served as head coach of the Railhawks. The match will be held on March 4.

“It is very exciting to have the opportunity to return to Carolina so soon after winning the NASL Regular Season Championship with the RailHawks,” said Rennie. “The game against the RailHawks will be the Whitecaps’ final preparation before the start of the MLS season and we know that we will receive a very competitive game that will help us prepare for a very important season.”

Whitecaps officially announce signing of Lee Young-Pyo
Rennie's first international player acquisition is Korean legend

The long-rumored signing of former South Korean international Lee Young-Pyo was finally made official by the Vancouver Whitecaps on Tuesday.

A week of reports from around the globe culminated on Sunday with photos of Lee’s arrival into Vancouver’s airport. That was followed on Monday night by an announcement from the 34-year-old player via Twitter, followed by Tuesday’s confirmation from the club.

“Lee is a quality individual and leader — both on and off the pitch — that has excelled at all levels of the game and we are thrilled he will be joining our club," said Whitecaps FC new head coach Martin Rennie in a statement

Change at the top in Vancouver as CEO Barber departs
Ex-Tottenham man signs off after successful transition to MLS

VANCOUVER, B.C. – There's change at the top of Vancouver Whitecaps FC, as the club announced on Friday that CEO Paul Barber is moving on to pursue another opportunity.

The Englishman handed in his resignation last week, but he’ll continue with the Whitecaps until Feb. 29, 2012, to help the transition.

“It’s been a wonderful two years at the club,” Barber told MLSsoccer.com on Friday at The Landing, the building in which the club’s head office is based. “I came here with some very specific goals in mind: to prepare the club for Major League Soccer, to manage the transition to Major League Soccer and to help the club move in to not just one stadium, but two.

“We’ve achieved that, and we’ve established our brand,” Barber continued. “We’ve got a fantastic season ticket base and fan base, great sponsors and a fantastic front office.”

Whitecaps get US international Nguyen in weighted lottery
Vancouver's high odds pay off, win lottery for midfielder/forward

The Vancouver Whitecaps' rebuilding process just got a boost.

The 'Caps won Thursday's weighted lottery for American midfielder/forward Lee Nguyen, beating out five other clubs for the US international's MLS rights. Nguyen signed a multi-year deal with the league on Dec. 6.

Vancouver had the highest probability of winning with 47.6 percent, while Canadian rivals Toronto FC were second with a 38.3 percent chance. FC Dallas, Houston, Real Salt Lake and the LA Galaxy also participated.

“We’re very excited to add a talented player like Lee,” Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie said in a statement. “He’s a young player with a bright future. We look forward to seeing him in preseason.”

Watson reunites with Rennie as newest 'Caps addition
Englishman spent three seasons with Carolina Railhawks

, B.C. – Martin Rennie added one his old charges on Friday, as the Vancouver Whitecaps announced they have signed Matt Watson, formerly of Rennie’s NASL Carolina RailHawks side.

The Englishman, a midfielder by trade, bolsters a position Rennie has targeted for improvement. Although born in Redditch, England, Watson has played his entire college and professional career in North America, first with the University of Maryland before moving on to the professional game in the second division.

“Matt has consistently been one of the best players at the North American second division level over the past four years — three of which I had the pleasure of coaching him,” Rennie said in a club statement. “He has had several offers to join Major League Soccer teams, so I am really pleased that he has chosen to take the next step in his career with Vancouver Whitecaps FC.”

Vancouver's Rennie on UK scouting, but stays mum
'Caps coach seeks defensive help, repeated success with Watson

VANCOUVER, B.C. — Here’s how Vancouver Whitecaps coach Martin Rennie spent the holidays in his native Scotland: He watched more than a few Scottish Premier League games, including the Old Firm derby between Glasgow rivals Celtic and Rangers, and popped down to England to take in a number of Premier League and Championship matches.

Yes, in between time with family, Rennie scouted, but he declined to say which English matches he took in for fear of fueling speculation about potential signings.

Whitecaps' Nanchoff eager for healthy return in 2012
Vancouver youngster plagued by groin injury in debut season

Stay healthy and help the Vancouver Whitecaps make a push for the playoffs. It’s that simple for Michael Nanchoff, who missed extended periods of the Whitecaps’ debut season in 2011 with a groin injury.

But if the “big rubber band” has anything to say about it, Nanchoff will see much more of the field in 2012.

Innovative physiotherapist Rick Celebrini, who joined the Whitecaps in July, put together a detailed offseason fitness plan for Nanchoff with the aim of injury prevention, using a device called the Core X.

“[The Core X] is some kind of crazy device which provides a lot of resistance,” Nanchoff told MLSsoccer.com by phone from North Royalton, Ohio, on Tuesday. “It gives tension to your left wrist, your right wrist and both your thighs. You can do all sorts of exercises and different movements with it.

Hassli will need to pick up where he kicked off

He was the toast of Vancouver for a large portion of last season for the Whitecaps. A giant, standing 6’4 and weighing in at 200 pounds. A complex myriad of tattoos adorned each of his arms. Eric Hassli had the look of a superstar, and in his first MLS match the talent was on display for all to see.

Hassli is a fan favourite here in Van City, with his dazzling goal against the Sounders and his likable demeanour. Fans are hoping that he will re-discover his form of old and blow the roof off of BC Place. However, as of now, I would think Long Tan is the favourite to start. Eric Hassli has the tools, and he could own this city if he consistently plays like he knows how. Until then however, he, like the entire Whitecaps franchise, has a lot to prove next season

Vancouver's No. 2 pick may depend on Montreal choice
'Caps aim to take player Impact don't – unless surprise is in store

The Vancouver Whitecaps may have the second overall pick in Thursday’s 2012 MLS SuperDraft but, to a certain extent, their decision is out of their hands.

With Darren Mattocks and Andrew Wenger the runaway favorites to be the No. 1 and 2 picks, according to most observers, Vancouver’s draft strategy very well could come down to selecting the player the Montreal Impact don’t.

“Having the No. 2 pick, we’ll need to react to whatever Montreal do,” club president Bob Lenarduzzi told MLSsoccer.com by phone on Monday. “There’s a pretty consistent opinion out there that the first two players are easily identified but, then again, that could have been said for last year, too. I think we surprised people by picking Omar [Salgado] with the No. 1 pick.”

Of those players selected last season by the ‘Caps in the SuperDraft, only Salgado and Michael Nanchoff remain on the club’s books, while Michael Boxall is also on the roster after being chosen in the Supplementary Draft

Whitecaps FC acquire MLS discovery rights to striker Etienne Barbara
Vancouver make deal with Montreal

Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that the club has acquired the Major League Soccer discovery rights to Maltese international striker Etienne Barbara from Canadian rivals Montreal Impact in exchange for Mexican defender Gienir Garcia, who was selected second overall in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by Whitecaps FC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gq5vh...layer_embedded

“Etienne is a fast, powerful player that can create goals,” said Whitecaps FC head coach Martin Rennie. “He understands soccer in North America and has had a good career in Europe. If we are able to sign him, he will bring versatility to our line-up as a wide midfielder or a striker.”
