Whitecaps FC earn big 2-1 victory over Eastern Conference leading New York Red Bulls

Harvey and Miller score to end NY's 7 game unbeaten streak

HARRISON, NJ – With the odds stacked against them, Vancouver Whitecaps FC (4W-4L-4D) responded by earning their first road victory of the season, coming back for a big 2-1 win against Eastern Conference leaders New York Red Bulls (7W-5L-4D) at Red Bull Arena on Saturday.

A second half own goal gave New York the lead, but tallies from Jordan Harvey and Kenny Miller gave the Blue and White all three points.

Comeback for injured Vancouver Whitecaps captain Jay DeMerit may not be in cards at all this season

In the midst of a one-win-in-eight spell, the Vancouver Whitecaps could probably use the kick to the backside the return of captain Jay DeMerit would surely provide.

But it looks as if the 33-year-old's comeback to the first XI could still be a ways off.

The Green Bay, Wisc., native made the bench over the weekend in his first return to a match-day squad since rupturing his Achilles tendon on opening day. But to hear Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie tell it this week, DeMerit was there more out of a shortage of options and to provide a presence rather than because he stood a chance of returning to the field.

Re: Vancouver Whitecaps FC

Vancouver Whitecaps' Jay DeMerit returns strong as ever in draw with San Jose

Days after Vancouver Whitecaps head coach Martin Rennie suggested to the media that Jay DeMerit might not play at all this season, the player did just that, coming on as a first-half substitute in Saturday's scoreless draw with the San Jose Earthquakes.

Not that the Scottish tactician had much choice in the matter.

The club was forced to leave center backs Johnny Leveron and Andy O'Brien in Vancouver due to calf and back injuries, respectively, and that meant Brad Rusin made his first appearance in the heart of defense since suffering a severe ankle sprain against the Portland Timbers on August 3, playing alongside Carlyle Mitchell, the squad's only other fully healthy central defender.

But, as has become the trend with Vancouver's center backs this season, injury struck once again. This time it was Rusin, who was forced to leave on 31 minutes due to pain in his lower leg.

Massive win in Montreal
Goals from Miller and Camilo carry 'Caps to important road win

MONTREAL, QUE – In case there was ever any doubt, the bitter two-decade rivalry between Vancouver Whitecaps FC (11W-10L-8D) and Montreal Impact (13W-9L-6D) is alive and well.

With the odds stacked against them, Whitecaps FC bolstered their playoff standing with a massive 3-0 road victory over the Impact in a spirited affair Saturday afternoon at Stade Saputo.

In a match that saw just about everything, including a penalty and no less than four crossbars, Kenny Miller’s seventh-minute tally carried Vancouver to their 11th win of the season – matching the club’s highest total in Major League Soccer.

One for the ages
Camilo thrills in highly entertaining match at BC Place

VANCOUVER, BC – A sensational second-half brace from Camilo salvaged an important point for Vancouver Whitecaps FC (11W-11L-9D) in a thrilling 2-2 draw with Portland Timbers (12W-5L-13D) Sunday at BC Place.

The Brazilian striker scored his 17th and 18th goals of the season within the span of three minutes late in the second half to help keep Whitecaps FC in contention for the final Western Conference playoff berth.

Camilo’s second tally was a brilliant scissor-kick volley that will no doubt be considered for MLS Goal of the Year. The goal leveled the game at 2-2 after Canadian Will Johnson put Portland ahead just a minute earlier.

With the crowd at their feet, the ‘Caps had at least three chances in stoppage time but Timbers goalkeeper Donovan Ricketts made a pair of game-saving stops as the Cascadia rivals played to their third straight draw this season

Heartbreak

Heartbreaking 3-2 loss to Colorado Rapids ends Vancouver Whitecaps FC's playoff hopes

COMMERCE CITY, CO – Vancouver Whitecaps FC (12W-12L-9D) saw their playoff hopes come to a heartbreaking end in a 3-2 loss to Colorado Rapids (14W-10L-9D) Saturday afternoon at thingy’s Sporting Goods Park.

Rookie Kekuta Manneh notched his fourth goal in the last two games and Camilo scored his 19th goal of the season but it wasn’t enough to get Vancouver the single point they needed to stay alive in the Western Conference playoff race.

A brace from Panamanian Designated Player Gabriel Torres, coupled with rookie Deshorn Brown’s team-leading 10th goal of the season, helped Colorado extend their home unbeaten streak to nine matches.

It was a thrilling match that saw two penalties and two world-class strikes – one from each team – but unfortunately for the Blue and White, it ended in heartbreak. Whitecaps FC now trail Colorado by six points going into next weekend's rematch at BC Place. Despite setting new club records in points and wins this season, the 'Caps are therefore eliminated from playoff contention

Ending on a high
Brazilian wins MLS Golden Boot with historic performance

VANCOUVER, BC – Camilo Sanvezzo will win the Major League Soccer Golden Boot as the league’s leading goalscorer after notching a hat-trick in Vancouver Whitecaps FC’s season finale Sunday evening at BC Place.

Whitecaps FC’s BMO Player of the Year brought his season tally to a league-high 22 goals and Young-Pyo Lee played his final professional match as the ‘Caps capped off their 2013 MLS campaign with a convincing 3-0 victory over the playoff-bound Colorado Rapids (14W-11L-9D).

Whitecaps FC part ways with Martin Rennie
The search for a new head coach will begin immediately

VANCOUVER, BC - Vancouver Whitecaps FC announced today that the club will not be renewing head coach Martin Rennie’s contract beyond 2013.

“On behalf of the club, I would like to thank Martin for his work over the past two plus seasons not only on the pitch, but in our front office, in our community, and with our partners,” said Bob Lenarduzzi, Vancouver Whitecaps FC president.

Lenarduzzi continued: “These decisions are never easy and include a lot of thought and analysis. We have made a number of improvements since joining Major League Soccer; however, in order for this club to continue to grow and reach the next level, now is the right time to make this change and move in a different direction.”

The search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

BRADLEY FOR VANCOUVER ?

Could Bob Bradley be in line for the Vancouver Whitecaps' vacant head coaching gig? According to The Province, the former US and Egypt national team boss has been interviewed by the Canadian side and is now one of their top targets. The same article suggests that the club's interest in Bradley is the main reason the 'Caps didn’t grab Frank Yallop when they had the chance last month.
