Toronto Turns Up Short
Reds dominated play but dropped a 1-0 decision
to Columbus at BMO Field on Saturday night
.

TORONTO – Bernardo Anor scored early in the second half as the Columbus Crew defeated Toronto FC 1-0 before a crowd of 18,944 at BMO Field on Saturday afternoon.

The Crew took all three points for the second time in three games this season, registering their first road victory of 2012 to move into a tie for second in the Eastern Conference with Houston on six points.

It was the third loss in a row, and the second straight at home, in league play for the Reds, who have had more success in the CONCACAF Champions League while scuffling elsewhere in the early going.

CCL Journey Ends

Toronto starts strong but falters in Champions League semifinal.

TORREON – Joao Plata and Herculez Gomez traded goals in a wild first half before one singular moment doomed Toronto FC, and sent the Reds home from the CONCACAF Champions League on Wednesday night.

That moment – an ambitious tackle from TFC Designated Player and captain Julian de Guzman on Santos Laguna’s Cristian Suárez at the edge of the penalty box in the 55th minute – summed up the sobering truth for the Reds in Torreon, Mexico.

You can knock them down, but they’re going to get right back up

Derby Drama Set To Unfold

Toronto trained at Montreal's Olympic Stadium Friday
ahead of first MLS meeting between sides.

MONTREAL – This is no time for Toronto FC to feel sorry for themselves.

Yes, their CONCACAF Champions League dream ended with a 6-2 loss to Santos Laguna on Wednesday. Yes, they're still without their captain, Torsten Frings. And yes, they're running an injured and short-handed defense into the ground with a packed early schedule.

But there is no time to worry about fatigue as they get set to play their fifth game in 14 days – and eighth match in a month – on Saturday against the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium (Live on TSN at 12 p.m. ET).

“There will be some tired legs after the game this weekend for sure,” Canadian international midfielder Terry Dunfield said after training at Olympic Stadium on Friday afternoon. “But coming here to probably our biggest rival in the league, the fatigue will be the last thing on our mind. We’ll be giving a hundred percent tomorrow and we’ll deal with that next week.”

TFC's Winter promises changes, addresses job security

MONTREAL – Toronto FC manager Aron Winter won't be standing pat as he watched his team fall to its fourth successive league loss to start the season on Saturday.

“It’s very simple, in the coming weeks I’m going to change some things,” Winter told reporters after his team lost 2-1 to the Montreal Impact at Olympic Stadium. “Zero points out of four games. I prefer to do it different with some players who are not making those mistakes or they want to battle.”

Winter was not happy with the way the team opened the derby match against Montreal, Toronto’s biggest rivals. He felt that his team played better after they were reduced to 10 men when defender Logan Emory took a red card for a tackle in the 65th minute.

“It wasn’t a red card,” Winter said. “I think with 10 men we were playing better than [with] 11, much better. You can make mistakes, but what I didn’t like was how we reacted, how we started.”

Hard Luck Reds
Late chances go begging as Reds drop a 1-0 decision to Chivas.

TORONTO – Toronto FC fell to their fifth straight loss to start the 2012 season after dropping a 1-0 result to Chivas USA on a blustery Saturday afternoon at BMO Field.

For Chivas USA, it marked their third straight away win to start the season with the decisive goal coming off a 31st minute corner kick delivered by Miller Bolanos and headed home by Oswaldo Minda for his first MLS tally.

Seeking to prevent a worst-ever start to a season in club history, TFC manager Aron Winter fielded an offensive starting XI featuring five attacking players. It looked like the move had the potential to pay immediate dividends after eight minutes when Joao Plata collected a Danny Koevermans lay-off and sent a dangerous shot wide right of goal

Recap:
Fire hold on for wild 3-2 win over TFC

TORONTO – A pair of teams that have had trouble scoring in 2012 produced a shootout on Saturday, as the Chicago Fire defeated Toronto FC 3-2 before 19,255 at BMO Field.

The Fire made Patrick Nyarko’s 58th-minute tally stand up as the game-winner despite a furious second half rally from the hosts. That followed a back-and-forth first half that saw both teams pepper each others’ goal with a series of shots.

The bombardment commenced early, as Dominic Oduro gave the Fire a 1-0 lead just 25 seconds in. Nyarko picked the pocket of TFC sweeper Torsten Frings, who was a bit too casual after receiving a poor outlet from goalkeeper Milos Kocic. Oduro streaked onto the loose ball, took a touch and slotted under Kocic for his third goal of the season and the fifth-fastest in league history.

Frustration continues to mount for Johnson, Toronto FC

TORONTO – Forward Ryan Johnson admits that his frustration is mounting with each Toronto FC loss.

The losing streak reached six after the Chicago Fire won 3-2 at BMO Field on Saturday. The Reds are one loss away from equalling the league record of seven defeats in a row to open an MLS season set in 1999, set by Kansas City.

“It’s really starting to get to me,” Johnson told reporters after the game.

Unfortunately, the prospects for the future don't look too easy: Toronto go on the road to Real Salt Lake on Saturday, one of the most inhospitable environments in the league.

It’s not just the losses, though. It’s the way they have come that hurts. Goals too easily conceded – usually early, sometimes late – have been the story of TFC’s season. The Reds found their scoring touch with a pair of goals by Reggie Lambe on Saturday, but again left Chicago too many easy openings.

WFC:
Toronto FC host EPL giants Liverpool on July 21

A sea of red is set to flood the Rogers Centre in Toronto this summer.

It was announced on Tuesday that Toronto FC will welcome English Premier League club Liverpool FC in a 2012 World Football Challenge match that will be played in the retractable-roof stadium on Saturday, July 21 at 4 pm ET.

A natural grass surface will be installed for the event, which will mark the first meeting between an MLS team and the storied English side.

Both clubs, who wear red as their primary color, have a history at the Rogers Centre with TFC selling out the building most recently in a memorable March 7 CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal first leg match against the LA Galaxy. The MLS Canadian side made history by advancing to the tournament semis on the heels of that 2-2 home draw.

The Liverpool, five-time European champions, made one appearance at Rogers Centre in 2004 against Portuguese side Porto in front of over 40,000 fans. This year's match against Toronto FC kicks off the EPL club's summer tour of North America.

Tickets go on sale to the general public beginning May 4.

ACC:
Winter insists TFC the better team vs. Montreal

TORONTO – Toronto FC’s losing streak has to end sometime, right?

Head coach Aron Winter is confident that moment will come on Wednesday, when the Reds hit the road to take on the Montreal Impact in the first game of the Amway Canadian Championship (8 pm ET, Rogers Sportsnet in Canada).

The Reds are 0-7 so far in the MLS regular season and winless in their last nine games overall, including a draw and a loss against Santos Laguna in the CONCACAF Champions League.

“When you get the first victory everything is going to change,” Winter said. “We deserve it also. Almost all the games we have played we were almost stronger than each opponent and that’s why it’s a little bit disillusioning and disappointing that, after seven games, you’ve got zero points.”

D.C. Defeat

Toronto suffers 2-0 loss at BMO Field to remain winless in MLS

TORONTO – History of the unfortunate kind was made on Saturday afternoon.

Toronto FC lost a record eighth straight game to open the season as Chris Pontius and Hamdi Salihi scored in the second half to give D.C. United a 2-0 win before 18,364 at BMO Field.

Pontius’s matchwinner came in the 55th minute when he struck a left-footed rocket from outside the box into the top left corner. It was his fifth goal of the season.

Toronto FC Head Coach and Technical Director Aron Winter announced Monday restructuring moves that will see First Team Assistant Bob de Klerk promoted to Technical Manager and Toronto FC Junior Academy Coach Jim Brennan move to the First Team as an Assistant Coach.

In this new role de Klerk will be responsible for Toronto FC’s technical program, including advance and international scouting, as well as serving as the technical conduit between the First Team and Academy program. He will also assist players transitioning from the Academy into the First Team and support the education of Toronto FC coaches at all levels.

Winter On Trialist
Head coach discusses Luis Boa Morte

Photo: Luis Boa Morte with West Ham in action against Deportivo La Coruna in 2010 (Getty).

TORONTO – Former Portuguese international Luis Boa Morte could be worth more than just a look on trial, according to Toronto FC manager Aron Winter.

“He is a good player and we can get him, probably,” Winter said on Tuesday at BMO Field after Boa Morte trained with TFC. “We want to give him at least a trial to watch him first. I think that he is a player, if you’re going to sign him or whatever, he could be an advantage.”

The 34-year-old has played for such teams as Arsenal, Fulham and West Ham in England. He most recently played for the Orlando Pirates in South Africa but left the team last week and has been released from his contract.
