Colorado officially signing of Chilean forward Harbottle

The Colorado Rapids added to their stable of South American talent on Thursday, announcing the expected signing of Chilean winger Kevin Harbottle. The 22-year-old winger and Chilean national teamer joins the Rapids from Chilean powerhouse Universidad Católica.

Harbottle will be eligible pending receipt of his P-1 work visa and International Transfer Certificate. Per league and team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.

“Kevin is a young, dynamic attacking player who will be a great fit for our squad this season,” Rapids technical director Paul Bravo. “At just 22 years old, he’s already proven he can play at a high level, and we look forward to helping him develop further as he integrates into our team and our league."

Rapids rave about Harbottle:
"People are gonna like this kid"

COMMERCE CITY, Colo.- The Rapids’ newest South American acquisition is a little awkwardly shy and is maybe a bit self conscious about his inability to speak the local tongue in his new home.

But once he begins to speak, Kevin Harbottle, signed from Chilean powerhouse Catolica only last month, opens up freely. And Rapids head coach Oscar Pareja is hoping his signing will help open up the field by providing width along the left wing this season.

The Rapids had been tracking the diminutive winger, whom they signed in January, for much of the offseason. And although he only stands at just 5-foot-5, Harbottle brings the skill and pace the Rapids are looking for in their midfield.

Match Recap:
COL 2, LA 0
Hendry Thomas and Dillon Powers score; team extends undefeated streak to six straight

COMMERCE CITY, Colo.- Pablo Mastroeni’s return to Colorado didn’t exactly go the way he was hoping.

In Mastroeni’s first game back in Colorado since his June trade to the LA Galaxy, two goals before and after the halftime break led the Rapids to a 2-0 win over the Galaxy at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park on Saturday evening, extending Colorado’s unbeaten run to six games.

Rookie of the Year candidate Dillon Powers delivered the corner kick on Hendry Thomas’ 41st minute header that opened the scoring, and then Powers himself scored less than two minutes after the break after a sharp feed from Edson Buddle.

Sanchez Arrives in Denver

Veteran has played for Toluca and Club America in Mexico, Bundesliga's Schalke and with Uruguay

Uruguayan forward Vicente Sánchez arrived in Denver on Wednesday, and is meeting with Colorado Rapids officials and medical staff as the team looks to finalize details of a contract for the veteran striker. Sánchez, who made his biggest impact in the Mexican First Division with Toluca and Club América, has most recently been plying his trade for Uruguayan team Nacional.

“He’s a player that I know from before,” said Rapids Head Coach Oscar Pareja. “I was tracking him last year for us, but the numbers didn’t work out. He’s a player who has been at a high level for a long time, and was active in a top league in South America in the last tournament. He’s a very professional player, a very technical player, and he has a lot of experience. I think he would adjust very well to the league.”

Colorado Rapids sign Panamanian forward Gabriel Torres as Designated Player

The wait is over. Gabriel Torres is a Colorado Rapid.

After a drawn-out and rumor-laden pursuit, the Rapids officially signed the 24-year-old Panamanian striker on Thursday evening, hours before the closure of MLS’ international transfer window. Torres arrives as the first Designated Player in franchise history.

Torres will be eligible to join the Rapids pending receipt of his P-1 visa. His Designated Player status comes from a combination of his salary and acquisition costs, the team explained, and he will occupy an International spot on Colorado's roster.

Oscar Pareja steps down as Colorado Rapids head coach

Oscar Pareja’s time as head coach in Colorado appears to be over, leaving the Rapids with a significant hole in their organization less than two weeks before the MLS SuperDraft.

Goal.com’s Ives Galarcep reported on Saturday that Pareja has stepped down from his position in Colorado after two seasons at the helm amid reports that FC Dallas are interested in bringing him back to Texas this season. A former player and assistant coach with FCD more for than a decade, Pareja has reportedly long been the club’s top choice to replace outgoing head coach Schellas Hyndman, who stepped down from the position in November.

Current New York Red Bulls assistant coach Robin Fraser is the top candidate to replace Pareja in Colorado, according to the Goal.com report. Former Portland Timbers head coach John Spencer – who suited up for the Rapids from 2001-04 and was a 2010 inductee into the club’s Gallery of Honor – is also a leading candidate, according to the report.

The Rapids did not immediately return a request for comment from MLSsoccer.com on Saturday.

Veteran midfielder Hendry Thomas tweets his farewell to Colorado Rapids

Hendry Thomas has severed ties with the Colorado Rapids after just two seasons in the Mile High City.

The 27-year-old Honduran midfielder tweeted out his farewell to Rapids fans on his personal Twitter feed on Wednesday, apparently punctuating the end to a short run as Colorado’s hard-charging holding midfielder.

The Rapids declined comment about Thomas’ status on Wednesday.

2014 Colorado Rapids Preview:
Can the kids be all right once again?

Once more, with feeling: For a team with so much youth, they are pretty old at one crucial spot: Center forward. Edson Buddle, who turns 33 in May and just hasn't been the same since the Ingolstadt move a couple years back, is the only legit target forward on the roster. And in the way the 4-2-3-1 has played this preseason, they need the ability to hold the ball up top. If he gets hurt – or just doesn't perform – they could be in trouble and have to redefine themselves on the fly.

Colorado Rapids officially name club icon Pablo Mastroeni as new head coach

The club announced that franchise icon and interim head coach Pablo Mastroeni is now officially the man in charge in Denver, one week before the Rapids open the 2014 regular season.

Mastroeni, 37, has led the Rapids throughout the preseason since former head coach Oscar Pareja left the club to lead FC Dallas. He has stated throughout the process that he was eager to lead his former club from the sidelines after serving as team captain from 2004-2013.
