Pontius scores two, DC rally falls short

The New York Red Bulls exacted a double dose of revenge in defeating archrivals D.C. United in front of a sold-out crowd of 25,187 at Red Bull Arena on Sunday night.

Red Bulls right back Brandon Barklage scored his first two career goals against his former club and teammate Jan Gunnar Solli scored the eventual game-winner as the Red Bulls erased an early 1-0 deficit and dished out payback for a 4-1 road loss suffered at the hands of United in April.

The result puts the Red Bulls even on points with United atop the Eastern Conference, with DC ahead on goal difference and New York having a game in hand.

Payne:
"DCU could begin new stadium construction next year"


D.C. United appear to be inching ever closer to an exit from RFK Stadium, and the club could begin construction on a new stadium sometime in 2013, according to club president and CEO Kevin Payne.

Payne and head coach Ben Olsen appeared on WAMU radio’s popular Kojo Nnamdi Show on Wednesday to discuss a number of issues surrounding the club, perhaps none more important than the idea of where and when D.C. will finally suit up in a soccer-specific stadium.

Mike Chabala acquired from PDX
Midfielder Kurt Morsink retires, named Scouting Coordinator


In his second season with the Timbers, Chabala has made nine appearances (six starts) during the team's current campaign. The defender has logged a total of 657 minutes and helped the Timbers to a 3-4-2 record when in the lineup.

Acquired from the Houston Dynamo midway through the 2011 season, the 28-year-old went on to start 13 of 14 matches for the Timbers, notching a goal and two assists. Prior to his move to Portland, Chabala spent more than five seasons in Houston. His best season to date came in 2010 when he played in 25 total League matches (22) starts and secured a goal and four assists.

For his career, the defender has played in 70 MLS matches (55) starts, logged 5,154 minutes on the field and tallied two goals and nine assists. While in Houston, Chabala was a teammate of current United players Dwayne De Rosario and Danny Cruz.

De Rosario misses late PK,
DC draw Union in wild finish


WASHINGTON – D.C. United captain Dwayne De Rosario missed his second attempt at a penalty kick in the 89th minute after scoring on the first as the Philadelphia Union held on to draw D.C. on Sunday, 1-1, in a match that spiraled out of control late at RFK Stadium.

An encroachment call on De Rosario’s successful penalty kick attempt in the 87th minute was followed by a scrum, during which United midfielder Branko Boskovic was handed a red card.

De Rosario rocketed the ensuing kick over the goal to preserve the final score, but the dramatics weren’t done. D.C. defender Emiliano Dudar was handed a straight red three minutes later, Union defender Sheanon Williams was sent off with a second yellow in the dying seconds of the match and D.C. teammates Chris Korb and Brandon McDonald exchanged heated words with each other after the final whistle.

DC spread the wealth, surge past Eastern foe Chicago


WASHINGTON – Jostling for playoff position against the team directly ahead of them in the Eastern Conference standings, D.C. United earned an important a 4-2 victory against the Chicago Fire Wednesday at RFK Stadium.

After D.C.’s forwards struggled to produce over the past two months, both Lionard Pajoy and Long Tan scored for United to deliver the team’s highest goal output since April 22.

Defender Brandon McDonald’s beautifully-placed header in the 51st minute proved the eventual game-winner and capped an all-around solid effort from a home side, while Chicago saw its three-match winning streak snapped on an overcast evening.

Boskovic's turn to play hero as DC keep raising their game

WASHINGTON — The day it was announced that D.C. United captain Dwayne De Rosario would miss the remainder of the regular season with a knee injury, coach Ben Olsen said he needed "some other guys to raise their game — me included."

Have they — and he — ever.

In eight days, United have won three consecutive matches without De Rosario, their latest a narrow 1-0 victory over Chivas USA at RFK Stadium on Sunday, and Olsen has more than made good on his direction.

“Dumb luck, I suppose,” Olsen said, tongue-in-cheek, following the team's win.

Recap: Dike scores late as Portland earn 1-1 share with DC



PORTLAND, Ore. – D.C. United inched toward their first MLS Cup playoffs berth since 2007 with a 1-1 draw Saturday night at JELD-WEN Field.

But United also let a much-needed road win slip away after taking a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute thanks to a controversial hand-ball call.

United’s goal, a penalty kick by Chris Pontius, was awarded on a questionable call by linesman Craig Lowry, who raised the flag on Timbers defender David Horst as he rose to defend a Perry Kitchen cross.

Portland channeled their anger and rewarded their distraught fans with a 79th-minute equalizer by forward Bright Dike, his second in as many games, to salvage the point.

Recap: DC capitalize on error to knock off struggling TFC


TORONTO – D.C. United took advantage of a mistake by Toronto FC goalkeeper Milos Kocic in the 88th minute to earn a 1-0 victory at BMO Field on Saturday on a goal by Hamdi Salihi and gather three crucial points in the race for playoff positioning.

D.C. United’s third victory over Toronto this season helped them solidify their playoff position with a 16-10-6 record with two regular-season games remaining.

Toronto FC (5-20-7) extended their winless streak to 12 games, a run that dates back to July 18 and includes nine losses.

Kocic mishandled a low shot from former TFC forward Maicon Santos, leaving an easy opening for Salihi to tap the ball in. It was the 16th goal Toronto have allowed in the final 15 minutes of a league game this season.
