Crew edges Revs 1-0 in MLS Reserve action

Justin Meram tallied late game-winner, Crew defender Shaun Francis made his first start of 2011

The Columbus Crew defeated the New England Revolution in its third match of the 2011 MLS Reserve League. Crew forward Justin Meram scored in the 88th minute to give the Columbus Crew its second consecutive win. Crew defender Shaun Francis started his first game of 2011 after being sidelined with a hamstring injury suffered in preseason.

New England traveled to Columbus with several younger players including four academy players – three of which started -- and its first Homegrown signing, midfielder Diego Fagundez.

The match was a fairly one-sided affair as the Crew started attacking heavily in the first half challenging Revolution goalkeeper Bobby Shuttleworth several times. A Tommy Heinemann shot in the 11th minute was followed with shots by midfielders Emmanuel Ekpo and Josh Gardner soon after.

Reserves Top Chivas USA

Seattle got goals from three different players to get a 3-2 win at Starfire in their first home Reserve League match.
TUKWILA, WASH. - The Sounders FC is now two games into their first MLS Reserve League schedule and they’ve played two drastically different games.

In San Jose in April, Michael Tetteh scored a last-minute goal to give the Sounders a 1-0 victory.

On Monday night at Starfire, they dropped behind 1-0 early, but battled back to take a 3-1 lead. Then Terry Boss came up big at the end to preserve a 3-2 victory over Chivas USA.

PORTLAND, Ore. – Second-half goals from midfielders Servando Carrasco and David Estrada guided Seattle Sounders FC to a 2-0 win over the Portland Timbers in an MLS Reserve League match before 3,393 at JELD-WEN Field on Monday afternoon.

Facing one another for a second time in Reserve League play, the matchup between the Timbers Reserves and Sounders FC Reserves possessed a physical tone. The back-and-forth battle between the two sides saw Seattle strike twice in the final 13 minutes to grab its second win over Portland. The Sounders FC Reserves came away with a 3-2 victory in their first meeting May 15 in Tukwila, Wash.

International absences means playing time for Chivas depth

At training on Tuesday, Michael Umaña, Francisco Mendoza, Gerson Mayén and Chris Cortez — all usually reserves — got some time in the starting lineup alongside first team regulars. With three games in eight days and several players missing, Fraser can be forgiven for shuffling his squad.

“Three games in eight days with a red card and three guys out on international duty, that changes the equation a little bit,” Fraser explained. “It’s good that we have guys that are just starting to come healthy again and it adds to our depth. It doesn’t change our preparation a whole lot — it does change some of personnel — but it doesn’t change our approach.”

Reserves Remain Perfect

The Sounders FC reserves improved to 6-0-0 with a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy, with the only goal coming from trialist Sammy Ochoa.

TUKWILA, Wash. – The Sounders FC continued to show their depth on Monday, as the reserves improved to 6-0-0 with a 1-0 win over the LA Galaxy reserves at Starfire.

In the 11am start, the Sounders got six saves from Terry Boss and a goal in the 82nd minute from trialist Sammy Ochoa to remain unbeaten in the reserve calendar.

“I think the group has played well for each other. I think it’s a reflection of the depth of our team as well,” head coach Sigi Schmid said. “The guys are working hard and they know that a guy like Lamar Neagle, through what he did on the reserve team, got himself onto the field. They feel hopefully they can do it and be the next guy.”

Vancouver reserves get valuable experience in PDL competition [/COLOR]

VANCOUVER, B.C. — The Vancouver Whitecaps Residency team wrapped up their season with a 3-0 win over the Washington Crossfire on Sunday, and members of the Whitecaps’ Major League Soccer roster were quick to point out the value of the Premier Development League side to the senior setup.

“It works in a lot of ways,” Whitecaps head coach Tom Soehn told MLSsoccer.com after training on Monday. “It helps our young guys who are looking to move up to the first team, and it helps some of the guys returning from injury or looking to get fit get quality minutes.”

Three members of the team’s MLS roster — Long Tan, Philippe Davies and Alex Morfaw (pictured above) — played a part in Sunday’s victory. As it happened, the MLS players showed their quality, as Davies opened the scoring with a free kick before Tan followed up with a brace to secure the win.
