Recap:
10-man RSL fall 1-0 to Herediano in CCL opener

Salt Lake’s CONCACAF Champions League hopes were handed an early setback as they fell 1-0 to Costa Rica’s Herediano on Tuesday evening at the Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica in San José.

Playing their first game in the competition since dropping the 2010-11 final to Monterrey, RSL already find themselves in a hole, though they can look forward to a pair of home games as they attempt the top spot in Group 2.

Elias Aguilar's well-worked strike from just outside the area in the 14th minute stood up as the game-winner and Nat Borchers’ 57th-minute red card plus an injury to Jámison Olave compounded RSL’s woes.

Braun's debut a bright spot in RSL's loss at Colorado

SANDY, Utah — There wasn't much to take away from Real Salt Lake's 1-0 loss to Colorado last Saturday. RSL were lethargic, tired, a step slow. But there was one bright spot: Justin Braun.

Acquired from Montreal on July 11, Braun logged 63 strong minutes in his debut appearance for his hometown club, manning a striker’s role in place of usual starter Fabian Espindola.

Recap: Saborio, RSL out-class last-place Chivas USA 4-0

CARSON, Calif. – Álvaro Saborío scored a hat trick as Real Salt Lake rolled past Chivas USA 4-0 at the Home Depot Center Saturday night.

Saborío’s first two goals came in the eighth and 11th minutes and the hosts never recovered; Saborío put the game out of reach in the 65th minute.

RSL (16-11-4) used the points to move into sole possession of second place, three points clear of both Seattle and the LA Galaxy. RSL could stand to gain some help from their Rocky Mountain Cup rivals as Colorado host the Galaxy on Sunday.

Recap: RSL 2-L.A. 1

Claret-and-Cobalt ride Espindola brace to down Galax

CARSON, Calif. – Real Salt Lake (17-11-4, 55 points, West #2) battled back after conceding an early goal to beat the L.A. Galaxy 2-1 at The Home Depot Center in Los Angeles, riding a pair of Fabian Espindola goals – his 8th & 9th of the year – to the victory, which puts RSL five points clear of the Galaxy (15-12-5, 50 points, West #3) and six points clear of Seattle (13-7-10, 49 points, West #4 - pending Sunday’s home match against Portland) into 2nd place in the MLS Western Conference. RSL needs just two points gained (or lost by Los Angeles) from its final two games to secure at least the No. 3 seed in the West.

Report: RSL acquire Findley's rights in trade with Portland

Soccer By Ives is reporting that RSL have acquired the rights to striker Robbie Findley from Portland via trade, laying the groundwork for the return of the forward who scored 29 goals for the Claret-and-Cobalt from 2007 to 2010.

RSL declined to comment on the report when contacted by MLSsoccer.com.

Portland selected Findley in the 2011 MLS Expansion Draft, securing his MLS rights should a return materialize. His best season came during RSL's 2009 MLS Cup-winning campaign, as he scored 12 goals and added four assists in 27 appearances.

That season, along with a call-up to the United States' World Cup squad, fueled a move to Championship side Nottingham Forest, where he has scored six goals in 25 appearances since signing with the club in December 2010. More recently, the 27-year-old spent time on loan with League Two's Gillingham, tallying one assist in seven games after joining in September.

Real Salt Lake signs one of top MLS jersey deals

In a deal completed in just over a month, MLS’s Real Salt Lake has signed LifeVantage as its new jersey sponsor.

While Salt Lake City is one the smallest markets in MLS, the deal is one of the league’s largest, as MLS sources put it at $30 million over 10 years. That’s about $1.3 million more per year than the team’s stadium naming-rights deal and three times more per year than what was being paid by XanGo, its jersey sponsor since 2005.

Re: Real Salt Lake

RSL name assistant Jeff Cassar as new man in charge

Real Salt Lake are replacing Jason Kreis with one of the safest bets in Major League Soccer: His right hand man.

The club announced Wednesday that it has promoted longtime goalkeeper coach Jeff Cassar to head coach in Salt Lake City, one week after Kreis left the club to lead 2015 expansion side New York City FC. The deal is for multiple years, RSL president Bill Manning told the Salt Lake Tribune.

Cassar, 39, becomes just the third coach in franchise history after a nine-year run for Kreis that transformed the organization and won an MLS Cup in 2009. Cassar has been on board for all of it – the MLS Cup, the 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League run and the team’s appearance in MLS Cup earlier this month – after he was hired just three weeks into Kreis’ tenure in 2007.

2014 Real Salt Lake Preview:
Once more unto the breach in Utah

Pretty much the same group: The biggest change this offseason is at the top, where longtime assistant Jeff Cassar replaces longtime boss Jason Kreis. This is a story that's been done to death this offseason, but it's worth repeating: Cassar is keeping the same tactics, and largely the same roster. It's about continuity, and the continuation of the whole "The Team is the Star" ethos in Sandy.

Real Salt Lake willing to pay the price for minor-league stadium
Tab estimated at $13 million to build a 5,000-8,000 seat facility at Fairpark.

In Real Salt Lake’s bid to build a minor-league soccer stadium at the Utah State Fairpark, the franchise has offered to pay the full price of the project.

The stadium, which would hold between 5,000 and 8,000 people, is expected to cost between $12 million and $13 million, said Trey Fitz-Gerald, RSL’s vice president of communications. And it’s a bill the franchise is willing to foot alone, forgoing the possibility of using some public funds.

While details have yet to be worked out, the deal would likely give RSL control over the stadium and its scheduling, allowing the franchise to operate a United Soccer League franchise there as a minor-league training tool.

Real Salt Lake aim to field USL PRO squad in 2015

Real Salt Lake are preparing to enter an affiliate team in USL PRO next year, the latest addition to the growing network of developmental ties between MLS and USL.

The plan was discussed by hosts Trey Fitz-Gerald and Brian Dunseth on Tuesday night's edition of the RSL-centric radio program ESPN700 OnFrame, and confirmed to MLSsoccer.com by RSL officials on Wednesday.

Should the club's USL PRO entry debut in 2015 as hoped, it would likely play home matches at RSL's Rio Tinto Stadium home while the Fairpark facility – a multi-use venue which would also host a range of other sports and events – is under construction.
